Four times, American aircraft attacked the Japanese ships in vain, 65 aircraft being shot down. But the 5th attack, made with 54 dive-bombers during the morning of 5th June was successful. Three of four Japanese Carriers, Akagi, Kaga and Soryu were sunk. The Japanese lost four of their powerful carriers and from that point on, no longer able to risk a major fleet versus fleet action, went on the defensive. By the time they had recovered enough to rebuild their fleet, American power had mobilized into the unstoppable force that Japan had so feared.

I bought this some years ago and was very dissapointed. Considering the potential for buildup,tension and climax in the whole Midway campaign the film is a rather poor effort compared with, for example, Tora Tora Tora!. The acting is pretty ham, and the attempt to comment on the internement issues via a Japanese girlfriend is dire. But a classic war film, a host of starsand a damn sight more historically accurate than anything more modern such as pearl harbour ...
