There are advantages to having more than one child. Apart from the joy children bring to your life there are other benefits. Having spoilt my son rotten by buying him practically all the Disney videos I could lay my hands on (as much for my entertainment as his) I now find that the outlay is so much less for my daughter. We get to enjoy all the videos over and over again at no extra cost.
One of her favourites (and mine) at the moment is a film which was first released in 1970 - The Aristocats. It is a delightful film which is classified "U" meaning it is suitable viewing for the whole family (like all of Disney's animations). The graphics in this film are amazing, especially when you take into account when it was made. You are provided with a sample of this on the video cover which depicts the main characters - Duchess, the beautiful white cat and her 3 cute kittens (Berlioz, Toulouse and Marie) and O'Malley, the street-wise alley cat on a pink and purple background. It also shows part of O'Malley's music-loving street gang playing musical instruments.
From the beginning of the film you are engrossed with the storyline and the comical antics of the three kittens. Duchess and the kittens live a life of luxury with their millionairess owner, Madame in her huge Paris mansion. However, their lives are thrown into turmoil when the greedy butler, Edgar overhears the mistress making out her will with her solicitor - stating that she is going to leave her entire fortune to the cats. Edgar then plots to get rid of the cats so that he can inherit her fortune. After doping them with the intention of drowning them he drives them out to the French countryside. He is, however, thrown off course when two interfering dogs decide to steal his motorbike and sidecar and the cat basket is thrown from the vehicle.
The cats find themselves by a river in a strange unwelcoming place wondering what has happened. Enter, O'Malley, the street-wise ginger alley cat who becomes their knight in shining armour as he tries to get them back home, with the help of some friends along the way. You are well aware from the outset that O'Malley fancies Duchess rotten but he is also great with her kittens.
I am not going to tell you any more of the story as it may spoil your enjoyment if you decide to view it. I, however, have watched it time and time again and still have not tired of it. All I will say, however, is that being a Disney movie you can be guaranteed a happy ending.
The film is an adventure from start to finish with toe-tapping Disney music (by the Sherman Brothers) throughout. The songs include the classics "Everybody wants to be a cat" and "O'Malley the alley cat". It is full of loveable characters and is most definitely Disney's jazziest classic.
It runs for 76 minutes - so it is not overly long for children with a poor attention span and it is currently available from Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk) at £13.49 (new) or used from £1.75.
If you have never seen this film why not treat yourself - you won't be disappointed.
