crash, only to find herself being pursued by a mysterious phantom figure that seems to reside in an old run-down pavilion. A classic nightmarish horror feature that sustains its disturbing atmosphere. A disquieting film filled to the brim with eerie imagery. The Ape ManConducting weird scientific experiments, crazed Dr. James Brewster, (Bela Lugosi), aided by his colleague Dr. Randall, has managed to transform himself into a hairy, stooped-over ape-man. Desperately seeking a cure, Brewster believes only an injection of recently-drawn human spinal fluid will prove effective. With Randall refusing to help him, it falls to Brewster and his captive gorilla to find appropriate donors - living or dead!Mesa Of Lost WomenA mad scientist (Jackie Coogan, Uncle Fester from TV's The Addams Family) has hidden out in the deadly desert known as Zarpa Mesa in Mexico. Here he develops giant spiders, deadly dwarves, and, through the use of a synthesized derivative of spider venom, a race of killer superwomen that cannot be stopped once they choose their sexual prey.
Advantages: Tim Burton's vision, great designs, special effects Disadvantages: Not as exciting as it could be, although never dull
a little unfair. It’s probably short of a set-piece or two in comparison with recent epics like Gladiator but it passes the time pleasantly and keeps you interested in what is going on. It’s also great fun to compare it with the original. Burton has thrown in a few things to keep the fans happy, such as a clever inversion of Charlton Heston’s famous "Get your stinkin’ paws off me..." line and an uncredited cameo appearance from the great man himself as a dying ape with a secret.
It is in comparisons with the 1968 version that this will suffer. That movie was a huge hit and its iconic final image will rest (or more truthfully, lie unsettled) in the minds of many a movie-goer. I actually read Pierre Boulle’s novel a few weeks ago and was surprised to find it a highly entertaining read. In many ways the classic ...

Advantages: decent film and transfer Disadvantages: not much in the extras
What with all the hype surrounding all things ape related in recent weeks it's now time to re-visit the film that started it all off.
I'm sure most of you have some idea of the plot. An astronaut crashlands on a planet and finds that mankind is not the dominant species on the planet. In fact to quote Austin Powers the planet is run by "damn dirty apes". Enslaved by the apes the astronaut makea a break for freedom with some liberated apes in tow as well as some humans. In this movie the humans don't talk. General ape antics ensue only without the special effects and budget that the lacklustre new "re-imagining" has. At the end of the day this has one of cinemas classic endings that towers like a statue over the mindbender that the new version has.
Currently the original movie isn't available on dvd in the UK. However a boxset has ...
A scientist whom the world believes to be dead is secretly working on a serum collected from the spine of a gorilla. He injects himself with this and slowly turns into an ape.
