So it is coming it the season of Hallowe'en were we all try and scare ourselves and more especially younger relatives into a coma. In keeping with this line of thinking I bought I few horror DVDs the other day and last night decided to start with watching this one. It seemed to be the meekest I'd seen the 2005 remake and I've also reviewed one of its crappy sequels so I wasn't expecting too much.
STORY The story involves the Lutz family. George Lutz has recently married Kathy a widow with 3 kids and moves into the Amityville home with her as it is cheep due to the fact a young man went mad there before and ended up killing his whole family because the voice in the houses told him too.
Anyway, the first sign things aren't so sweet and shiny come about when Rod Steiger appears as a priest to bless the house. The family are all out in the garden and inside alone he starts to get afraid and feel sick, swarms of flies appear and he flees the house because of a demonic scream of "Get out".
Following this George starts to go abit odd in the house, getting angry and always feeling cold. The dog seems to have an affinity for the basement and the daughter starts talking to an imanginary friend who knows what went on in the house before. Things start to build up, pressure builds on George and the film climaxes with the house going all out. And the demonic forces striking poor Rod Steiger blind
The story is apparently true, as are all tabloid newspaper stories i.e. not that true at all. There are some facts about the Amityville story that are true but don't be too naive. I quite enjoyed, it's not a terribly scary film like say The Excorcist, which I think is still probably one of the scariest films and should be watched this Hallowe'en. There are some bits like make you jump and a Kathy Lutz has one particularly disturbing dream in it. Rod Steiger plays a great performance but come on it's Rod Steiger what do you expect.
It's classic horror though not the best and it is one of the situations were I would almost recommend the remake instead. I paid £4 I wouldn't pay any more than that if I were you. The only DVD extra is a original trailer.
