This film is a remake of the 1979 classic horror about a haunted house. It is based on the true story of the Lutz Family who originally moved into the haunted house in Long Island in 1975.
As a rule I would usually say that most 'horror' films are not really scary - however that is definitely not the case with this one.
The original story upon which the film is based started in 1974 when Suffolk Police responded to a telephone call to find six people slaughtered. Ronald DeFeo confessed to shooting them with a shotgun (his own parents and 4 siblings) - and claimed that the house had forced him to commit the murders. A year later, George Lutz and his wife Kathy moved into the house with their three children. 28 days later the family fled the evil house leaving all their possessions behind - never to return.
The film, gripping throughout builds up to a marvellous climax - and is well worth a watch from any lovers of horror and scary films.
The plot follows fairly closely to the origial story, although there are some differences - one new addition being the ghost of one of the murdered girls befriending one of George Lutz's children. I think the changes actually add to the film - so many remakes just appear to be exactly the same in plot whereas this one, even though I had seen the original, kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time waiting to see what happened next.
The main stars are Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George - very well acted by both of them - and the Melissa George especially manages to show both terror for her husband and fear and emotion for the safety of her children.
I haven't actually purchased this DVD yet (only rented it) - as its release date is the 24th of October - but I would certainly recommend buying it - I will be. Amazon.co.uk are offering a very good price of £14.99 at the moment.
