The Adventures of SherlockHolmes - by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
INTRO
The Adventures of SherlockHolmes is a collection of twelve stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his famous detective. It follows the novel "The Sign of Four" (which I already reviewed) and it is the first work on Holmes which has been written in the form of short stories. From what I could gather online, I can tell you that they were originally published as single stories in the Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The book was published in England on October 14, 1892 by George Newnes Ltd and in a US Edition on October 15 by Harper. The initial combined print run was 14,500 copies. The book was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for occultism, although the book shows few to no signs of such material. Later, the embargo was lifted ...
Advantages: The most true and accurate representation of the Holmes tales. Disadvantages: Not a huge budget production.
This, the first collection of the Granada SherlockHolmes TV production. is in my opinion, the best. It includes the Adventures and Return of SherlockHolmes, when the brilliant Jeremy Brett was at his best, still unaffected by illness or sadness.
In the Adventures, Brett is testing and learning how to play Holmes- but with this inventive nature, he produces the most entertaining performances of the entire series. Jeremy Brett is, in my opinion, the best actor to have ever portrayed Holmes on screen, as he takes on all the idiosyncrasies, gesticulations and characteristics the actual Holmes had, as detailed in the literature. His pronunciation, thanks to his self-taught elocution when younger, allows him to take on the role with ease and his depiction of Holmes is brilliant- acting not as former men such as Basil Rathbone in creating ...
Advantages: It is Sherlock Holmes! Disadvantages: Dated and a bit theatrical
In the world of SherlockHolmes there are two very well known screen portrayals of Conan Doyle?s immortal detective. Jeremy Brett on the TV screen in the 80?s and 90?s and Basil Rathbone on the cinema screen in the 40?s. There have been many other versions of the character in both formats but most of them are lesser versions, unable to match the style and quality of these two.
Before even Rathbone played Holmes though there was a British series of Holmes films starring one Arthur Wontner.
The Triumph of SherlockHolmes was made in 1935 and is one of five Holmes films made in the thirties starring Wontner. One of these is lost forever, a second is rarely seen but the other three are all available on DVD very cheaply. My copies came from the much lamented Murder One shop in central London, a shop that sadly vanished very recently from ...
