Review of The Adventures of Pluto Nash, the Man on the Moon.
The DVD
Produced in 2002 and released on DVD in 2003, this DVD is categorised as a comedy. The movie stars Eddie Murphy in the leading role as Pluto Nash, a nightclub owner. The DVD was released by Warner Bros and carries a PG rating. The film does contain some frequent, mild bad language, mild sexual references and moderate fantasy violence. The run time is 91 minutes. The DVD can be viewed in English, French or Spanish and has subtitle facilities for English, most European & Scandinavian languages and Hebrew. The DVD will play in region 2, Europe. As for the Special features, I didn't actually use any of these, I won't pass comment on them, but have listed them below!

Basic Plot
The movie is set in 2087, Pluto Nash, the main character is a highflyer, the successful owner of the hottest nightclub in the universe. Pluto Nash is a popular character who exudes charisma, he is a bit of a ladies man and he lives life to the full.
The nightclub comes to the attention of a lunar gangster, Mogan, who wants the club for his own. Pluto Nash refuses to sell the club and finds himself in trouble with Mogan and his mysterious partner Rex Crater. The two 'baddies' have developed a plan to take over the entire moon, Pluto Nash uncovers this and with the aid of his robot bodyguard, Bruno, played remarkably well by Randy Quaid, and his employee, singer and pool shark, Dina Lake, the trio try to outwit the villains.
The action moves from the nightclub to the moon and Pluto Nash's past adventures as a smuggler of black market Earth goods catch up with him.
The movie is very much an Eddie Murphy showcase and the actor plays his part in his usual manner, 'the very nice person up against very nasty people, but winning through no matter what is thrown at him' type scenario!
I won't describe anymore of the plot for fear of spoiling the DVD for others.

Cost and availability
This DVD was purchased as an impulse buy recently when I was browsing in a Pound Shop, at £1 I didn't stand to lose much if the film was awful! The DVD can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk for around £3 new or from 1p used.
My thoughts and conclusion
Over all, not a bad film, not hilariously funny, yet an amusing movie. The plot is a little weak in places and I felt that the movie was basically a showcase movie to kick start Eddie Murphy's career. Perhaps that is me being critical, but I did rather feel that Murphy's role was tailored to out shine the other characters. The special effects in the movie were ok, not as bad as some, but they were nothing remarkable.
There were one or two memorable scenes and characters. I particularly liked the Robo Bodyguard, Bruno, who was an old model and not quite up to the mark. Bruno tended to sulk when Murphy didn't behave how Bruno wanted him to and in one scene Bruno tells Pluto Nash's mother how unkind Nash has been. The scene was very well played and you did start to feel a little sorry for for Bruno, until you remembered that he was a robot, not a human with emotions and feelings!
Unless you are a confirmed Eddie Murphy fan, I would say this DVD is great for whiling away an evening, it is amusing with no complicated plot to concentrate on, watch it and enjoy it for what it is, harmless entertainment.
