Finding myself at work again in the library on Saturday morning left me with a pile of returned DVDs to security check and shelve. This is fun for me because I like to find new things to watch and one such thing was The Accidental Husband starring Uma Thurman which looked like it was worth a watch. It seemed like a light-hearted romantic comedy, probably my favourite genre and I liked the look of the cast as well so off home it came with me. I watched it the other day while spring cleaning my sitting room and I must say, I was left disappointed.
Dr Emma Lloyd presents a popular radio show which offers advice on all things to do with love to her callers. However, her life changes majorly after a fateful telephone call from a listener ends in a called-off marriage, but the jilted fiancé is listening to her show and Emma's advice. He decides to exact revenge by ruining Emma's love life by becoming her "accidental husband", annoying her fiancé Richard by refusing to sign divorce papers and generally get on Emma's nerves. But neither of them counts of what is coming next.
I must agree that the plot of this is totally ridiculous and doesn't make much sense, but things are all revealed as you watch. In fact, the pivotal moment of the film happens within the first ten minutes and its the rest of the story after the main event which follows. I couldn't see how this would work and the way they did come to the crux of the problem was somewhat ridiculous, and I don't know how they ever thought that this could work. Also, this film is marketed as a rom-com but I must say I didn't laugh out loud once, and therefore for me, it immediately felt sour.
I thought that perhaps the cast could save it for me, but they didn't because they just weren't that great either. Uma Thurman is a brilliant actress and I have loved her in a lot of films, especially the Kill Bill ones but she just didn't work in the part of Emma Lloyd for me at all. She was a bit wooden, and the worst part was the lack of chemistry between her and Colin Firth as Richard. In fact, it was actually quite painful to watch at times, there was no connection between them at all and they weren't believe as a couple in any way, shape or form. I didn't feel Firth put in that great of a performance either, certainly not compared to his past ones in other rom-coms. The only actor I thought was okay was Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the jilted fiancé Patrick. He seemed to put a lot of heart into his role, and was the most believable out of the main actors.
Judging by the calibre of actors in the film, I thought that they would be able to save it from being a complete disaster. But because they just weren't convincing in their roles, it didn't work in that respect either and I just found myself not enjoying the film at all. It seemed to stumble along with no real aim to it, a completely obvious ending that you could pretty much guess before you've even seen one second of this diabolic shambles of a Hollywood movie. It was pretty dreary, with the character of Emma Lloyd preaching about love although its clear she has no idea about her own relationships. Consequently, I didn't like her character and couldn't care about her, which wasn't good considering she was the main lead and in almost every scene.
I also found myself very bothered by the direction the film took. It didn't seem obvious why certain things happened, one minute she was all lovey dovey with Richard and the next with Patrick and looking miserable as sin. It seemed they were trying to chop and change the scenes as quickly as possible to get to a ending, however rubbish, hurried and silly it might seem, and it really did seem like they weren't all that bothered about the quality of this film, or indeed its likeability. I really did not like this film at all, and just cannot recommend it to anyone, whether they are a fan of rom-coms or not. It wasn't fun to watch, it wasn't funny, the cast were poor in their roles for the most part, and it was just pants. Disappointing, and one to avoid.

...makes an enemy out of the jilted fiancé who holds her personally responsible for having destroyed his life.
When the jilted fiancé, Patrick Sullivan, is given the opportunity to wreak vengeance on the woman who destroyed his relationship and his life, he seizes the opportunity in order to destroy the radio DJ’s life. With the assistance of an extremely likeable and clever teen hacker, Patrick will soon find himself married to… the enemy… but that’s ... ...longer than the time it takes to get even.
‘The Accidental Husband’, although the masses have given it a relatively poor feedback rating, is an extremely entertaining movie that possesses a ‘feel good’ atmosphere that is highly infectious. Although Uma Thurman isn’t your usual rom/com star, she was perfect for the role of Dr. Emma Lloyd. The character outline called for someone who, although possessing a quirky nature, was devoid of the usual blond ...

The Accidental Husband was released in 2008 and was directed by Griffin Dunne. The film is basically a typical American romantic comedy that follows the love triangle story between New York fire fighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Dr Emma Lloyd (Uma Thurman) and Richard (Colin Firth). Patricks fiancé phones the show and Emma advises her to call of the wedding which she duly does, leaving Patrick distraught and with no explanation other than what he heard on the radio! Patrick sets out to get revenge on Emma, who is about to get married herself to Englishman Richard. Patrick's neighbour hacks into the government database and fakes a marriage certificate between Patrick and Emma, meaning she cannot marry again! ...

Actor-turned-director Griffin Dunne needs a little more practice when it comes to his second career. This should be a gossamer-light romantic comedy, but his heavy-handedness makes it feel more like a stodgy pudding of a movie. Every element is predictable, from the montages that show the influence Emma has in her listeners to the inevitable walk through the rain to the one she loves and the ...

The Last Sign (2004)
I wish. Watching Andie MacDowell set up a direct debit would generate greater levels of excitement and tension. Sadly, in reality, MacDowell plays the part of recently widowed Kathy. She finds herself better off without her alcoholic and abusive husband, but has begun receiving anonymous phone calls and experiencing disturbing coincidences and flashbacks. It is affecting her social life and could result in a total breakdown.
First up, I was getting mixed messages about how Kathy felt. There was no sense of freedom from her husband's accidental death, and little background to go on. It's never a good sign that you need to refer to the back of the DVD case for a plot point. The slow moving plot feels deliberately vague in an attempt to make something from nothing. Eventually we get round to a few supernatural ...
