(*The 51st State was also known as Formula 51)
Released in 2001, this semi-violent movie, filmed mainly in Liverpool, U.K., based its story around the illegal drug world and a brand new, more powerful drug which had just been created, (supposedly 51 times more powerful than cocaine, ecstasy, speed and acid, hence the title).
**BRIEF PLOT**
**Caution.. may contain spoilers**
When Elmo McElroy earns his degree in pharmacology he thinks his life is made until one simple mistake involving a marijuana cigarette and a police patrolman change it forever. With Elmo then unable to secure a job in the pharmaceutical world he turns to what he now best and creates a new, highly intense drug, calling it POS 51, which apparently made from all natural ingredients.
An American drug lord named Lizard, (played by Meat Loaf) wants to buy the formula from Elmo and sets up a meeting. Unfortunately the meeting goes wrong as double crossing is on everyone's mind and many deaths occur inside the meeting place.
Now with Elmo being hunted by contract killer, Dakota, (played by Emily Mortimer) hired by the very unhappy Lizard, he heads of to the U.K. to try and sell his new drug there.
In England he meets up with ex-hitman Felix DeSouza, (played by Robert Carlyle) who has been hired to escort Elmo to a meeting with Leopold Durant, (played by Ricky Tomlinson), the head of a Liverpool criminal organisation.
Everyone wants the formula for the drug, the skinheads, Lizard, Leopold and even a bent detective named Virgil Kane, (played by Sean Pertwee), so when a mass meeting is set up in a private box at Anfield, (Liverpool F.C.s home ground, as they host a game against rivals Manchester United), everyone turns up to get the formula.
A blood bath ensues as a bunch of trigger happy gangster settle their differences in a confined space.
Then the actual truth about POS 51 is explained as Lizard finally succumbs to the greed of drugs.
**IN CONCLUSION**
A very violent movie indeed, with many deaths, (some are seen in a comical sort of way but are still deaths).
Samuel L. Jackson plays his part as the chemist brilliantly and when he teams up with Robert Carlyle the humorous side of the movie moves up a gear, both trying to avoid assassination whilst trying to find a buyer for the formula.
The ending is fantastic and well thought out by the writer as the final twist is pure genius, and somewhat comical in a sick sort of way.
With everything this type of movie needs in it, like car chases, blood baths, deaths, romance, more chases and many more deaths, it is a great action packed movie with enough of everything to keep the audience happy.
Would I recommend this movie..? Yes I certainly would. It is action packed and runs at a good speed, never boring and sometimes comical, considering the topic the movie is covering. 10 out of 10 in anyone's books
