extraordinary black and white film from Shinya Tsukamoto caused a sensation when it was first released, and spawned a companion piece, Tetsuo II: Body Hammer.Concerning itself with a young man's gradual mutation into a metal-being, the film takes a surreal journey into a dark and disturbing world where D.I.Y. body transformations and post-human women with deadly robot arms form the fabric of a strange new reality.Likened the work of Lynch and Cronenberg, Tetsuo moulds explosive violence, bizarre sexual imagery and jet-black humour into a cinematic experience like you've never seen before.
inspires so much of David Cronenberg's work and then twists it into a Manga-influenced cyberpunk vision. A man (Tomoroh Taguchi) awakens from a nightmare in which his body is helplessly fusing with the metal objects around him, only to find it happening to him in real life... or is it? Haunted by memories of a hit and run (eerily prophetic of Cronenberg'sCrash), the man knows this ordeal could be a dream, a fantastic form of divine retribution, or perhaps technological mutation born of guilt and rage.Shot in bracing black and white on a small budget, Tsukamoto puts a demented conceptual twist on good old-fashioned stop-motion effects and simple wire work, giving his film the surreal quality of a waking dream with a psychosexual edge (resulting in the film's most disturbing scene). The story ultimately takes on an abstract quality enhanced by the grungy look and increasingly wild images as they take to the streets in a mad chase of technological speed demons. This first entry in his self-titled "Regular Sized Monster Series" was followed by a full-colour sequel,Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer, which trades the muddy experimental atmosphere for a big-budget sheen but can't top the cybershock to the system this movie packs.--Sean Axmaker

A fascinating and at times disturbing look into the world of fetishism and sado-masochism. It'd be near impossible to convey any sort of story line in the form of a review, but there is a loose narrative of sorts, involving a man's quest for revenge and his transformation from a meek Japanese business man into a hybrid of man and machine, hell bent on destruction and, it is finally revealed, apocalypse. The power of this film to shock lies more in the imagery and unconventional filming style than in it's content, the story itself is something of a classic revenge story, but it is executed (pardon the pun) with such finesse in terms of cinematography it really does warrant multiple views. The entire film is set to a brilliant soundtrack (if your idea of brilliance is similiar to mine, encompassing) elements of krautrock, noise, punk, breakcore and psychadelia, that really adds to the shock value of the film.
Distinctly "art-house" in it's production, don''t let that put you off if it's on your list of "maybe's", this one's a real eye opener!

tetsuo - the iron man 1989
it is now my duty as i have watched this film several times to try and understand the meaning of it to pass on what i see as my knowledge of it to other people whao may not be as patient as me to try and figure out what the hell this film is all about.
i dont know how i am going to write this but here goes!
a man with a metal fetish runs into the road and dies
the man who killed him and his girlfriend both suffer the ... ...his girlfriend by having sex with him as his penis turns into some sort of rotating power drill???
This is what you see but throughout the film there is references to the first metal man and it seems to me that his father beat him over the head and rammed a metal pole into his head that could not be removed, resulting in him becoming all metal. In a similar way to the ring it is him passing on his misfortune.
very similar to the david lynch classic ...

A visually arresting and highly disturbing urban flight of fancy from Japanese auteur Tsukamoto, who also starred, wrote, shot, and edited. A buttoned-up Japanese commuter accidentally rams his car into a cyberpunky 'metal fetishist' (Tsukamoto) whose jollies include transplating metal parts into his body. After this encounter, the businessman begins inexplicably transforming into a metal man-machine, and soon finds himself merging identities (and bodies) with the similarly mechanized fetishist.
