Ive always long had been a fan of the terminator franchise, owning all three DVD's. Been to see the ride at Universal Studios etc, I could watch these films countless number of times. This review is on the first terminator film, were the saga first started and where this epic film set a standard for future sci- fi films. The film truly is a part of cinematic history, not largely due to its script, but for its direction, its sci-fi action sequences and its character performances. For a film that was made in 1984 it's got some awesome special effects. The film was directed and in part co written by the brilliant James Cameron, who really set a high standard, his vision and imagination, really makes this film magnificent to watch, whilst at the same time, even twenty years after its release you could still watch it in amazement.

Plot:

The film is set in 1984, America were viewers are introduced to the concept of the terminator a unstoppable, machine which is sent back through time from the year 2029, to assassinate Sarah Connor, the mother of John Connor, the leader of the human resistance against the machines, in the future. The hell bent machine, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger must track down Sarah Connor and terminate her, before John is born, if successful, then John would not exists and the machines would inevitably win the future war. However, with every bad guy, a good guy is also present. Kyle Reese is sent back through time by John Connor, to protect his mother from the machine. Oh and did I forget to mention that Kyle is actually Johns dad?
This fast paced sci- fi film shows us the story of what happens to Sarah Connor, does this deadly cyborg track her down, or does Reese help protect her

Characters:

Sarah Connor:
Sarah is played by Linda Hamilton, who just so happens to be the ex wife of James Cameron. Sarah is the mother of John Connor, who I this film is a struggling waitress, just trying to find her way around life. Her first encounter with Reese is one of shock on her part. She really can't believe his theory of machines being sent back through time, and her being the mother to a child whom will be the future leader. However, after her first encounter with the machine, she soon realises how deep she really is. I thought Linda was portraying a great character, how she transforms from an elegant, soft gentle woman, to a soldier type figure.

Arnold Schwarzenegger:

This is without a doubt Arnold greatest ever role, and one we all no and love him for. For someone who only had less than 50 words in the whole film, he done one hell of a job. His movement, his voice, and I guess his accent really made him believable as a machine. His cruel ways of killing and unremorseful fashion is also evident.

This film is simply a piece of art, its dialogue, the script, and the intense action scenes make this a must watch film. The terminator is so raw with hatred, his walk, his talk all made him seem real. The special effects were awesome for that era, in particular the closing scene with the terminator coming out of the burning truck, or the scene with him calving out his eye ball. What made this film even more awesome to watch was its storyline, never had it been done before and it really does make viewers start to think if there would ever be a possibility of machines being able to do this. It was ironic that machines were just starting to make a big impact during the late 80's and then this film just comes out. A great action film, a great set of characters, brilliant direction and script, and one of the best films ever made.

Cast:
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Michael Biehn
Linda Hamilton

Budget: $ 6,400,000
Revenue: over $78 million

This is a brilliant film that still holds up well today. I've seen it several times over the years and will happily watch it several more. I liked T2 very much as well, but not so keen on T3 - T3 was a good movie but not on a par with the others.
