There have been few futuristic films as well made or intelligent as The Terminator, and for a film with such a low budget and a monosyllabic German in the lead it hasn’t done too badly. If Star Wars is the ultimate kids sci-fi film and Dune the ultimate adults sci-fi, then The Terminator is most definitely the ultimate teenage sci-fi film. The Terminator, however was not an immediate hit and took a while to find its audience as it was too cool for parents and unsuitable for young teenagers. When I was at primary school it was the film you had to have seen, along with Predator and Robocop and the fact that it was an 18 only increased the desire to see it. Long before I had seen it , everyone was spouting those taglines and quotes that even people who haven’t seen it seem to know. “Come with me if you want to live” and “Ill be back” are
still incredibly popular and as for Sarah Connors last words to Arnie…..I still get in trouble for saying that.
The Cast List is as follows: Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor Paul Winfield as Traxler Lance Henriksen as Vukovich Rick Rossovich as Matt Bess Motta as Ginger
It is an outstanding cast, although the only name still famous is Arnie. Since Terminator he has made many, many other films where he wanders around with a gun and kills everybody in sight. Its become an annual thing and most are extremely popular; Predator, Commando, Conan the Barbarian, End of Days, The Last Action Hero and Total Recall. But of course he has made a few turkeys and we will never quite forgive him for The Sixth Day or Jingle all the Way. Arnie seemed to discover in The Terminator the prototype for all the other characters he would ever play, which is fine by me, he may not win an award but without his random shooting the world would be a poorer place.
The plot of The Terminator is simple in its basic form, but as soon as you start asking questions it gets very confusing very quickly, and really requires an understanding of the second film so that it makes sense. I once took the time to work out the complete plot and realised that it is full of holes and errors, so don’t even think about it you will go cross eyed trying to figure it all out. In the future the world is controlled by machines trying to exterminate humans, the leader of the rebellion sends a man to protect his unborn self in the past. The machines send back a Terminator, a robot perfect in the art of killing who aims to terminate Sarah Connor thereby preventing the leader of the resistance from ever existing. Both time travellers track Connor, making her very jumpy in the process and many people get killed, including the finale shoot out at a police station. The ending is not much of a surprise but is still incredible, and is vital to the plot of the second film.
It is a superb film, intelligent and uncompromisingly bleak with powerful performances and outstanding special effects. Okay, so the effects are nothing by today’s standards but this was a low budget movie in 1984, its brilliant for what it is. It set the standard by which all robot/futuristic films are now measured, although T2 has better effects and more of them The Terminator is a far superior film for many reasons. It has a riveting storyline and a sharp cult script full of brilliant one liners, as well as dark and intriguing. The plot has long been the subject of drunken pub debates which shows how open ended and infinitely interesting it is. Though it is not a cult film at the moment it is fast becoming one. This is an absolute must see, even if you hate the genre, you’ll love this.
