The Terminator was and still is the most awesome film of its genre. A full blooded, rollicking rollercoaster of a ride from start to finish that leaves you glued fast to your seat.
I can remember seeing this when it first came out. The fact that I was underage didn't seem to bother the cinema management - I bought the tickets and probably some maltesers too (two elder brothers probably ate them though (and the maltesers!).
You know the story or you should by this time. A Terminator is sent back in time by the computers which have taken over the world, to kill the mother of the future resistance leader (as they are losing). The resistance are however able to send one lone soldier back as well to help save Sarah Connor.
Arnold is thee man in this film. He is The Terminator - half organic, half cyborg killing machine who does not stop, he simply does not stop. With no human emotions to hinder him he mercilessly kills everything that moves or gets in his way and the way he searches for Sarah by using the phonebook and murdering them all one by one is sinisterly and unnervingly simple.
Linda Hamilton plays Sarah Connor - a waitress, with no visions of being the mother of the future world-saving John Connor. She doesn't even have a boyfriend! Relatively unknown before this film, Linda brings a certain plausibility to Sarah's character - endlessly questioning the belief that The Terminaor is real and from the future, until it is plainly obvious that he is.
And she in turn is ably assisted by Michael Biehn as Kyle - the soldier from the future, who also doesn't know Sarah's identity and has to play a careful watching game over the Terminator. With no futuristic weapons, Kyle has to make do with what he can find and he soon finds out a little shotgun isn't go to harm mean and nasty Terminator-man.
The story is fed along at a fast and exciting pace by director James Cameron, well supported by some fine camera angles, a killer script and an eerily impressive film score. So Arnie doesn't say much. Who cares?? He's a Terminator!! I happen to think - 'Fuck you asshole' is one of the best lines ever and equally as memorable as 'I'll be back'.
Overall - science fiction par excellence. A classic that stands the test of time. And I'm not going to mention paradoxes!!
