The Terminator was once a B-movie, dwarfed by larger blockbusters it overcame its shackles by boasting a fantastic storyline and a great casting move of having Arnold Schwarzenegger play the unstoppable cyborg killing machine. Not weighed down by the relationship aspect or the in-jokes of the sequel, this film is as fresh now as when it was originally released. There is an overwhelming feel that this film was 'meant to be' and everything is perfect, from the story itself to the effects, which haven’t even really dated that much since the 80’s. It’s a testament to James Camaron that this film did as well as it did and is still considered as a classic piece of Sci-fi horror even now.
The storyline, for those not in the know, is that robots control the future. A band of human freedom fighters are the only thing that opposes the machines and when they learn of a plot to send a killing machine (the Terminator) back to the past to kill the mother of the freedom fighters leader, he must go back too and protect her from the seemingly unstoppable killer. This film, however, is not concerned with exactly how the machines came to control the world or indeed who created them, that is left ot he sequel, but it is pure explosive action all the way and what action it is! Arnie excels as the vicious machine, breaking through walls without flinching and generally destroying or ignoring anything that gets in the way of his mission.
The DVD is a treat for any big fans of the film, it boasts and anamorphic transfer that means this is the best quality you are ever likely to see the film in and the remixed 5.1 soundtrack makes the action sound like it’s in your living room! Add to this the second disc, which is filled to the brim with documentaries about the making of the movie and the concept behind it, some excellent deleted scenes which, for once, really do add something to the film and make you wonder why they were left out in the first place and even some of the different scripts from the film. This package is the definitive version of the film and really shows why DVD is such a special format.
Buy it and you’ll ‘be back’ for more.
