The Terminator is not one of those films which flashes its sci-fi credentials at every possible moment. Rather, being set in the early-eighties present, it builds slowly as it reveals its story, slowly turning the world of a fairly ordinary Sarah Connor upside down, as she is hunted by a relentless robotic killer, and protected as well as possible by a man who suddenly appears from nowhere. Gradually we learn the story, and without giving too much away to those who may not know, it involves both of these mysterious characters coming from the future. The Terminator is one of a bunch of early-eighties dark sci-fi including Blade Runner, Escape from L.A. and Mad Max, which reflected the pessimistic, somewhat paranoid mood of the time. It has an excellent story, decent acting and a few memorable moments, most notably the scene in the disco, that "I'll be back" quote and the scene where Sarah Connor finally crushes her opponent. A few surprises in store, plenty of action, and a haunting atmosphere make this a film well worth seeing - especially in a double bill with the sequel.
