war is being fought between man and machine in the year 2029. Metal has taken on a life of it's own and man may be no match for its strength. The humans have one hope: Sarah Connor. She is the mother of a great leader. She just doesn't know it yet. Unfortunately, the future does. A cyborg is sent back from the future to kill Sarah before her child is even born. The humans send back a man of their own to fend off the machine and rescue Sarah so her unborn child can lead the resistance.
The key to making a successful science-fiction movie lies within the believability of the script. "The Terminator" is one of the greater science-fiction movies out there. First time director James Cameron shares writing duties with Gale Anne Hurd (producer and Cameron's future wife) with a bit of help on the dialogue from William Wisher. They created a tightly constructed backstory that leads these two creatures (human and non) to the present day. The psychologist in the film acts as the audience, questioning all the details and looking for flaws in the logic. The reasoning behind the time-travel and everything in the movie works. One thing I did not understand is the lack of culture shock on the part of Kyle Reese, the human being from the future (played by Michael Biehn). Perhaps there's no time to be amazed by still-standing buildings and the thousands of happy people wearing bright clothing and the everything else when you have to track down the great Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton - Cameron's future wife). In fact, I wasn't too interested in most of the characters from the 80s. Paul Winfield as the seen-it-all Lieutenant was my favorite of the bunch. Most of them weren't developed enough and only acted in ways to further the plotline. The point of the film was the chase, anyway.
The film works so well because it crosses a variety of genres. Of course there is the science-fiction aspect. However, more prominently featured are the action and thriller facets. And, as there is with most movies, we have the love story (although it is very plot-driven). Throw some cheesy synthesized sounds of 80s for the score (by Brad Fiedel) on top of the thrilling, heart-pounding excitement of people and machines being shot and beaten up and cars getting destroyed and things blowing up real good and you got yourself one hell of a movie

Wow,I remember first watching this I thought it was fantastic and I still do after watching loads of times,I recommend this DVD to all Arnie fans or anyone who is into Sci-Fi movies. For the plot I won't into too much detail, Basically , its set in the year 1984 in Los Angelas,a robot is sent from the future AKA The Terminator(Arnie) ot hunt down and kill a woman,Sarah Connor, who will have a son that will be very important in the furture for mankind, ... ...Kyle Reese who has to protect Sarah Connor from the The Terminator.The Survival of Sarah Connor will determin the Future of Mankind.As for buying this DVD GET IT! GET IT! Advantages: Best movie of the eighties Disadvantages: Yet another re-relaesed, messed with movie
The Terminator is a great movie that even now stands the test of time.
You just know that you are in for a treat when you see a naked Arnold Schwarzenegger at the start, walk up to a bunch of street punks, and put his fist through the torso of the dude who stabs him after being ordered by Arnie to give up his clothes and boots.
What follows is Arnie attempting to win the future war against mankind by murdering his way through the Los Angeles phonebook ... ...character, her name is the last of the Sarah Connors in the directory, so she has time to be stalked by a scruffy bloke in a trenchcoat. He turns out to be Kyle Reese, future freedom fighter, and father of Sarah Connor's unconcieved child, John Connor-saviour of mankind.
After numerous chases and dead policemen, Kyle Reese dies, Arnie gets crushed in a press, and Sarah Connor moves south to have a baby and to avoid the coming nuclear war.
The end.

...elements of the story. The Terminator is a cyborg, so it naturally does what a cyborg would do. It stares coldly at its targets, scanning them, before pulling out its gun and blowing them away. This could have been one of the film elements that became unintentionally comical. A thing that just stares coldly at someone is not something that one may be afraid of…unless, it was done properly. There are many elements in Cameron’s script that help turn ... ...doesn’t direct the Terminator to do anything too over the top. The stare is exactly what it is supposed to be, cold and methodical. One may think that this is one of those campy elements, but anyone who sees the stupendous work done with the character will become a believer. Advantages: Great film, enjoyable Disadvantages: not for little children
...time and also sending a terminator to remind him, for peope who like action films, terminator 2 is after this film and also there is a terminator 3, which was released in 2003. I myself loved it when i first ever saw it, then i wanted to watch the next one and the next one!
The effects for that time was quite good, with all the machines.
overall, this would be a good film to watch, for a night in. ...
