So much hype is all over the internet lately about yet another Terminator movie being released for 2006/2007, and me being a big movie maniac I have decided to write a review on the last Terminator movie, T3 Rise Of The Machines, and share some of the rumours which are circling about the fourth instalment to the popular franchise.
As this is meant to be a review of this movie.......... and I fear that all that I have to write about the fourth one may not actually quite fit here, I will begin writing about this one, which of course being TERMINATOR 3 - RISE OF THE MACHINES (T3)
T3-
This of course being the second sequel to the popular sci fi movie The Terminator. Over 10 years have past since John Conner, Sarah Conner and the T-100 blew up cyberdyne systems to stop Judgment Day and erase what ever chances that a war against the machines might happen. Unfortunately their efforts 10 years ago only postponed Judgment Day, and the war against the machines is inevitable. Once again, two terminators have been sent back in time to try and manipulate the future. One being our most loved Terminator, the T-100 played by Arnold Swarzennegger, who's mission is to protect John Conner who is the leader of the futures resistance, and also Katherine Brewster, who also plays a key part in the future resistance against the machines. However a deadly new Terminator model, the TX, played by supermodel Kristina Loken, is sent back in time to kill all of John Conners future lieutenants, and also destroy prime targets John Conner and Katherine Brewster themselves. The TX is far more advanced than the obsolete design of the T-100, and it being a women is no relevance for the way she can kick ass. The TX has weapons much powerful than anything the T-100 can muster, which is actually built in her arm. She can also control other machines such as vehicles and computers, even other terminators! The TX
has a lot of things in common with the T-1000 Terminator we saw in T2 Judgment day, in which being, a liquid metal model, but with a hard skeleton also, but much deadlier.
John Conners destiny becomes much more apparent, as he learns he is not the only one who plays a key part in the futures resistance. Katherine Brewster, who he used to go too high school with, is his future wife, who also shares a high command in the inevitable war against the machines. And her Farther is the one responsible for Skynet, the anti virus program that becomes self aware and turns the machines against the humans. Computers are failing all over the globe which control the military from an unknown virus, and thus far, there hasn't been a strong enough anti-virus to kill it. Katherine Brewster's farther, a high ranking military officer knows only one way of getting rid of the virus for all, which is to implement Skynet, not realizing Skynet IS the virus. If Skynet is implemented, he will open the gate for the machines to become self aware. With the help of the T-100 and John Conner, Katherine Brewster must convince her farther to shut Skynet down and never use it. But with the police and the TX chasing them such a task is never easy. Will they be able to shut Skynet down in time? Or will John Conner have to accept his destiny and rise as the leader of the human resistance?
DVD EXTRAS:-
Deleted Scenes Some good deleted scenes, with extended versions of the TX fight with Arnie, one part in which the TX is actually trying to bite his arm off. Documentary -
"HBO First Look" Featured Interesting look at how all the make ups done
On-Set Gag Reel Introduction by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and some funny mistakes.
I did enjoy T3, as it has been so long eagerly awaited, however it didn't come no where near what director James Cameron did with the first two movies. The story could have been a lot better, and I felt it was really missing James Cameron. But I did like the way the story takes on the inevitability of the war, instead of always trying to make the written future not happen.
Arnold Swarzzennegger plays a great T-100 again, and certainly can still deliver even if he is soon old enough to have a bus pass. I really liked the idea of the other terminator controlling him and turning him bad, although I felt it could have been done in a lot more stronger way. Although I must say that there were certain parts in this movie where they made Arnies character look a little silly. Especially the part where he's obtained his cloths from a male stripper, and tries on some ridiculous sunglasses shaped like something you would see Elton John wear............how the hell are you suppost to take a big strapping terminator seriously if he looks a bit of a puff.........yes, always good to have comic relief but don't push it. Also it kind of missed Linda Hamilton's role of Sarah Conner, who played Johns mother in the first two, although she is mentioned in this, I still expected to see her pop up somewhere, even if it was just for a brief cameo.
John Conner is played by Nick Stahl this time around, who I thought made a much more believable character than that of Edward Furlong in Terminator 2. I like what he did with the character, who is now not as cocky as Edward Furlongs character, but much more of an older, and stronger John Conner, and was definitely one of my favourites in the movie.
Claire Danes plays Katherine Brewster. She does some great acting in this and I really liked the part she played. I think her character brought a lot of appeal to this movie and gave it a great unknown edge.
And of course Kristina Loken, who plays the deadly female Terminator the TX. Not only is she very stunning to look at, she made her character very believable of whipping Arnie's ass. Her stern face expressions, and her explosive moves and weaponry made her worthy of a deadly opponent to any man or Terminator.. Fantastic.
Special effects were brilliant in this sci-fi movie, and it's one of the most expensive out-of-studio to make films to date, especially considering Arnies enormous upfront pay deal to actually get him to star in this one.
Overall, it's not a bad movie, although I feel, like other Terminator fans out there, I was expecting a lot more from it. But I did like the way it left you for more, in which we might actually see the war against the machines actually happen.
RUMOURS CIRCULATING FOR TERMINATOR 4.....................
As I said at the beginning of this review, there has been a lot of hype in magazines and on the internet of a fourth instalment. Without trying to wreck the plot for those of you that have not seen Terminator 3, it left you realising the war against the machines is actually going to happen, and survivors John Conner and Katherine Brewster are now in charge of the resistance.
Rumours suggest that this will go deeper into the future, with the human race battling against the machines. We can expect to see newer model terminators, but Arnies T-100 is in doubt. Mr Swarzenneger as all of you well know is Governor of California, and his acting career is much on hold for now. However, a cameo role has been written for him to pass on the baton to a new terminator which could be played by the likes of the Rock or Vin Diesel. I don't think they will no where near have the effect that Swarzennegger gave to such a character, but never the less big enough guys and screen names to pull off such a part. Nick Stahl and Claire Danes roles are also in doubt as they may actually be replaced by older characters considering the movie takes place further into the future. Also the big buzz suggests that Michael Beihn who played Kyle Reese in the original terminator movie, who in fact is John Conners real farther, has a part in this movie, which this I think is an excellent Idea considering he was the soldier sent back through time to save John Conners mother in the first place and died before he ever got too see his son, but still don't change the fact that in futuristic terms, Kyle Reese was not even born yet, so there is still a chance that John Conner might actually finally meet his farther.
Official word is that Director Jonathan Mostaw, who took over from James Cameron in Terminator 3, is supervising the scripts for the fourth movie and is in talks for directing this one, and we may see it on our screens by late 2006 early 2007.
Hope that is something to go by. Thanks for reading. Dempsey :-)
