Judgment Day: Terminator 2 was released in the UK in August 1991, seven years after the first film. I’ve seen the film several times now and thought I should review it.
Judgment Day also known as Terminator 2 stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Edward Furlong as John Connor. It also stars Robert Patrick as the T1000.
The story is by James Cameron and William Wisher. James Cameron also produced and directed the film. It was filmed mostly on location in California with a few shots in Mexico. Judgment Day runs for about 2 hours 15 minutes and is rated 18 due to the violence.
An unstoppable cyborg known as the Terminator T1000, which can change its shape into anything it touches, is sent back from the future to eliminate John Connor, a future resistance leader who fights against the machines taking over the world. Skynet is the computer that sends the T1000 to wipe out John Connor who is winning the battle against the human like machines
in the future. His mother, Sarah, is in a mental institution where she’s been for a while and John is disillusioned with what he sees as her madness when she talks of him having to save the future.
Another Terminator is sent back by the future John Connor to protect the Connors, who just happens to be the spitting image of the original Terminator that Sarah Connor had to help defeat 10 years ago to ensure her son was born into the world so she could train him to fight in the future.
Will the Connors and the Terminator be able to defeat the unstoppable T1000? Will they survive to tell the tale and fight the future war? You need to watch to find out…
It’s not often that a sequel to a hit film comes up to the mark of the original. Terminator (the original) was deemed a masterpiece in Science Fiction by fans of that genre. The special effects used might be viewed as dated by viewers nowadays but nonetheless they were very good with no inconsistencies that I noticed. I thought it was a clever twist to have Arnie sent back in this sequel as the cyborg with a “heart” considering he was the murderous “robot from hell” in the first Terminator film.
I couldn’t fault the acting skills of the main characters. I’ve always rated Linda Hamilton as a decent actress and she delivers well in this film. She’s very convincing as a parent who will stop at nothing to ensure her son grows up equipped to deal with what she knows will happen in the future. The young John Furlong was suitably cheeky and cute in the role of John Connor. Some of the scenes between Schwarzenegger and Furlong were quite amusing especially when the latter tried to “humanise” the robot. Robert Patrick was very convincingly as the steely eyed “baddie”. Schwarzenegger himself, well he played his role to perfection, especially the scenes where he has to take orders from the young John Connor, e.g. when “he” tries to understand (as a robot) why he shouldn’t kill anyone and everyone who gets in his way.
Judgment Day was nominated for several Oscars and won for Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Makeup. It was also nominated for many other awards in different countries and won several too.
I can’t go into much more analysis about this film as, even though I enjoy some sci-fi films, I’m not well versed enough in the genre to give a detailed analysis. Real sci-fi fans would possibly stone me for my “girly” take on it. Suffice to say, I enjoyed this film enough to have watched it several times and would watch it again and found it a decent follow up from the first film. Having seen the third installment, which would be a separate review altogether, I definitely prefer this Judgment Day over the next film. I will say though that easily pleased sci-fi fans will enjoy the fact that there are elements of time travel in the film along with clever shape-shifting robots and pretty darn good special effects. All round good entertainment I say!
From what I understand the film cost about $100 million to make and recouped all of that and much more at the box office. You can see how that much money was spent when you see the visual effects deployed and hear the sound effects. Also I’m sure the leads were paid a nice hefty sum, especially Arnie…
Rolling Stone magazine said of this film, “A kinder, gentler terminator. What an affront,” which really made me chuckle.
I’m not generally a huge fan of sci-fi films but quite enjoyed watching this one (in spite of the violence). Overall I’d rate it 7 out of 10.

Not seen this in years, one of those films though I have to say that I'd not watch again. Nice review though

Fab review. I think I've seen this, granted it was many, many years ago so I'm not entirely sure. I can tell you one thing though... I'll definitely be there on opening night for the new Terminator movie. Christian Bale... yes please! :) x
