This review is on the box office smash hit, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Linda Hamilton. I must say this was my favourite film out of the trilogy, the storyline, characters; special effects for that era really made this a rock solid action film. After a 7 year wait, fans were gifted with a sequel that was well worth the illustrious wait.
Brief Recap of the first film:
Let's take a brief recap of what happened in the first film. A cyborg sent back from the future (2029) is sent through a time displacement field to the year 1984. Its missions were to assassinate the Sarah Connor, who would give birth to a son (John Connor), whom in the future would lead the fight back against the machines. The machine played Schwarzenegger, is however not alone. A solider sent back through time (Kyle Reese) must protect Sarah Connor from the muscle bound, machine freak. Obviously the outcome of the first film ended happily and sadly, the terminator was destroyed and Sarah managed to escape, however her lover Kyle dies.
General Plot for Terminator 2:
The sequel picks up ten years on from the first film. We have a new addition to the Connor family in the form of a 10 year old wild child John Connor, who one day will lead the human resistance who fill, fight the machines. Between the first and second film, Sarah was involved in stopping technology advancement, and one day tried to blow up a computer factory, however she was shot and arrested. Her belief of a war between humans and machines, made people question her sanity, and she was therefore locked up in a mental institution, (Pescadero State Hospital). This meant an angry John was now left in foster care, living a rebellious life. Two men arrive from the future (2029), each with different intensions. The first man is the terminator Sarah encountered in the first film, and the second
is an unknown machine, much powerful than Arnie. It would seem that the once bad cyborg, hell bent on killing Sarah in the first film, has been reprogrammed and sent back by John to protect him during his teenage years. However, a more powerful, faster, stronger machine is hell bent on destroying the future leader. The film is a none stop action packed marathon, who will win, only the future can tell us.
Key to the Film:
The key, central plot of the film is to destroy the Sky Net Headquarters, which can only be done with the help of their most powerful and intelligent scientists Miles Dyson. It was thought that in a few years, Miles would create a state of the art micro processing chip that would help develop computer technology, and would consequently result in machines becoming more powerful, this is a no no. Miles, along with Arnie, Sarah and John would blow up the headquarters, which would destroy all of Dyson's work, along with any future trace of the project.
Character Profiles:
It would be foolish if we didn't start off with the model 101 Terminator played by Arnold. His character is a total opposite from the first film, primarily because he's a good guy in this film. His missions is simple, to sever and protect John Connor, the leader of the human resistance against Skynet. Arnie's model is a old one; however he is still capable of kicking some serious ass. I really loved Arnold's character in this film, for one it's not a terminator film unless he's in it. Secondly is physique and movement in the film really makes you feel as if he a machine. I really loved the way James Cameron develops Arnie's character throughout the film. At the beginning, he has no emotion, no human nurturing, however is time with John bringing emotion and human characteristics out. The final scene were he is about to terminate, actually looks like he's about to cry, although machines can't cry you really get the feeling he's temporarily human.
T-1000:
This was most defiantly a step up from the first terminator way back in 1984. The T-1000, played by Robert Patrick, is the opposite of Arnie, he's a pure evil killing machine, and his objectives are even clearer, to Kill John Connor, and anyone who gets in his way. The T1000 can absorb damage better than Arnie, he can recover faster, his mobility is better and he really is a step up above Arnie's character. The T1000's major innovation is his mimetic poly-alloy construction, which means he has the ability change appearances of any object, such as other humans, which he does do during the film. I personally thought Robert done a brilliant job, he really made viewer believe he was a robot, the way he moved, walked talked and ran were just a few examples.
Sarah Connor:
Sarah's character again played By Linda Hamilton is a huge step up from her original role. She's stronger, more powerful, and to some extent more enraged in this film. We really get to see her hatred for machines and Miles Dyson in this film. She's also a typical mother like character, helping her child to become the best in life and achieve whatever may be their destiny.
John Connor:
John Connors character was played by Edward Furlong, a child superstar at the time. I really liked John's character, firstly because by first impressions you would never think his character would one day help save mankind. He's such a rebel, he doesn't care for anyone or anything and you get the feeling, how is this guy going to save the world. But his relationship with the Terminator helps his character grow and progress throughout the film, at a young age he becomes more involved in his responsibilities. Both the terminator and John share a really close bond, John not having a father in his life almost accept the terminator as his temporary father, this is evident during the final scenes when he doesn't want the machine to go, shedding tears.
Special Effects: James Cameron and his special effects team done a brilliant jobs with the effects for this film. Today's younger generation may think this is nothing special or they may think we have seen this all before, but for a film made in 1994, to be producing visual effects of this calibre is truly amazing. The special effects for the T1000 are very impressive, the bullet wounds disappearing and his turning from liquid metal to human form are something out of this world.
Skynet Info:
Although Skynet is fictional, it is worth mentioning how the company comes about and evolves as this plays a key role in all three of the Terminator films. Skynet a defence computer system was originally created by humans in the late 20th century. Skynet was able to develop state of the art intelligence machinery, after is captured a machine arm, from a robot in the first film. Skynet was originally developed by Cyberdyne Systems, however with the main headquarters being destroyed in the second film, the military takes over the development of the software. Skynet was introduced to help combat the human error, however the system became self aware and learnt at a geometric rate. The machines now became more powerful than the human controllers, and launched a nuclear attack on the world, which bought about the Judgment Day.
I was totally impressed with James Cameron; to be honest I thought this was by far his best film to date, beating Titanic. The storyline was just brilliant; it actually made so much sense, because in 1994, computer technology had just started taking more awareness. The plot was unique, it had never been done before, which is why it was even more joyful to watch. It was nice to see a David and Goliath battle between the two machines. Arnie was not capable of outsmarting and beating the T1000, however is endurance and ability to always protect John made him fight. The characters were very well portrayed, storyline simply brilliant, and special effects simply out of this world. Im sure most people have seen this film, but if you have been under a rock for the past 20 years, I really would recommend this film. Perhaps the best aspects of the film are the one liners Arnold's character seems to produce some of which include; "Asta la vista baby", "Ill be back"
