Terminator 2 is the sequel the the highely successful 1984 blockbuster The Terminator. This movie picks up twelve years after the evens of the first film. Sarah Connor is now a hardened soldier who is held in solitary confinement in a mental institution for blowing up a computer factory. John Connor is now a healthy young boy who steals money from ATM machines using a modified laptop and spends his days in the arcade. Dr. Silberman returns as a slimy psychologist in charge of Sarah Connor's treatment.
The plot is fairly straightforward and very similar to the previous film. The T-1000 comes through first and instantly kills a police officer patrolling in the area and steals his gun. However, unlike the T-800 Model 101, the serial number of the previous Terminator, this model is made of liquid metal, and takes the form of a police officer. Throughout the film, the T-1000 takes the form of many other characters, including Sarah Connor.
Shortly after the arrival of the T-1000 is the arrival of the Terminator, who has been reporgrammed by the resistance to protect John Connor and take orders from him.
After being liberated from the mental hospital, Sarah decides to use the same tactics that the machines use on their leader, SkyNet, by planning to terminate Miles Dyson, the man who inveted the microprocessor unit that the machines use, who works for Cyberdyne Systems (mentioned as the creators of SkyNet in the previous film). However, the Terminator and John arrive and stop her from completing her mission. However, when Miles Dyson learns of the future (thanks to Sarah and the Terminator) he wants to help destroy SkyNet.
The film has many subplots such as the relationship between Sarah Connor and the Terminator (when she first meets him in the mental hospital she panics and runs away) and the relationship between John Connor and the Terminator.
The acting is superb and the main plot shins throughout. The special edition coems with deleted scenes embedded into the film (such as the reprogramming of The Terminator by John and Sarah to allow him to think [SkyNet sets the microprocessors to read-only by default] and the vision Sarah has of Kyle Reece, her protector from the previous film who died at the hands of the Terminator).
Special effects-wise, this film is a lot better than its predecessor. There are now no more stop-motion sequences, but real models and cutting edge (for 1991) CGI.
However, much of what made the original a hit has gone. There are now no Future War sequences like the previous film apart from the introduction (which is very similar to the previous film's introduction) and the end scene is now just narration (unlike the gas station ending of the previous film).
The special features are very good, but the film on its own would have been better.
