The Terminator was a massive success (Read my review for more info) and so it was inevitable that a second film would be made. But could it possibly beat the brilliance of the origional film?
For starters, Terminator 2: Judgement Day has a different feel to it. Rather than being a horror (I think it's a horror anyway....) like the origional, James Cameron decided to make the sequel an action packed masterpiece! The other major difference is that Arnie is now the Hero! Yey!! Those sneaky guys in the Resistance captured a Terminator of the same model as the one that the Machines sent before. After a bit of programming, the Terminator is now a loyal protector of John Connor, the soon to be leader of the Resistance. So who is the baddie? Bring on Robert Patrick. He plays the part of the T1000, a far better model than the previous machine. It has the ability to change shape as it is made out of liquid metal. It can change into anything it touches including people and even the floor! But it cannot form complex moving parts such as guns and other machinery.
John Connor (Edward
Furlong) shows an appearance this time around, as a 12 year old boy living with his foster parents. He does some very good acting for somebody so young. Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is in the film again, this time around though she has toughened up and is being held in a mental institute for trying to blow up a company involved with the war in the future. Miles Dyson (Joe Morton) is a character not previously mentioned. He works for Skynet, and is the creator of the superchip that will change the way machines think and will lead to the destruction af the World!
The Plot In the year 2029 Machines are wiping out the Human race. Resistance leader John Connor was targeted before he was born in 1984 by a Terminator sent back in time. Another Terminator was sent, this time to 1997, when John is just 12 years old. The resistance send a one also, that they have captured and re-programmed. They arrive in the same way as before, naked and with streaks of lightning whipping through the air. The T-1000 kills a nearby police officer and takes his gun and car. Using the onboard computer finds where John lives with his foster parents. Arnie however has detailed files already as he was programmed by John himself. He steals himself some biker clothes and his Harley! (And a shotgun...Yes!). Again, there is a race to find the target! Upon hearing that his mother is in danger, John wants to rescue her from the institute where she is being held. After being rescued, Sarah is determind to stop the war now that they have a Terminator at there disposal......
This is a great, action-packed film with big guns, car chases and the odd bits of comedy. The effects are very good for there time, seeing the T-1000 change into different people is a lovely site as I'd never seen this done before. The Truck scene is great, the T-1000 in the truck, John on his little motorbike, and Arnie on his Harley! The infamous regeneration scene is also in this film, which many spoofs have adapted to. The T-1000 shatters into a hundreds of pieces and then melts down and forms back together! Is there no stopping him?!
The DVD extras are, as a whole, good. This DVD comes with the extra bits that they left out. For example there is a scene where John tries to get the Terminator to smile so he looks more human and understands them better. Although hilariously funny, it's a bit silly and slows the film down. But I think I'm a bit Biased as I have seen the origional on VHS about a million times. One of the welcomed extras is the effect on the T-1000 the regeneration has on him. He loses control of his mimicing ability and copies everything he touches, for example his feet mould with the floor. A short but nice touch. Michael Biehn returns as Kyle Reese for a short dream that Sarah has in the institute, which is a god insight as to what she is going through. Other extras include the usual "making of" featurettes that demonstate the techniques used in the film. They also show the difference in budget by showing the Machines of the future models. In the origional they were tiny and cheaply made, in this one, they are much larger and have fully working parts and mechanics.
So, the big question, Is it better than the origional? Some people think so, probably due to the better action and effects. But I think they are both equally great in different ways. The first film was very scary and tense, largely due to the great music composition. The fact that 2 humans were up against an indestructable machine was what made the first film so thilling and tense. OK, so the effects aren't great (Arnie without an eye anyone...!) but the plot and acting is just pure bliss! Yeah sure the acting is as equally good in Judgement Day, and the effects are soooo much better, it just doesn't have the tension the origional accomplished. So I think that the origional just wins over by a scrape! That's my verdict anyway.....
Overall: 98% It would score 100 if it didn't have the extras include added bits in the film (I'm just so used to the origional film see). But a wonderful film, one of Arnies finest! A must see to everyone! I love the Terminators, God bless James Cameron!
