'Terminator 2: The Ultimate Edition DVD' truely lives up to it's title. It's amazing how many features they have crammed into one double sided DVD. It truely surpasses anything out on DVD at the moment.
This wonderful film is written and directed by James Cameron and is about John Connor (Edward Furlong) and a reprogrammed T800 terminator machine (Arnold Schwarzenneger) who has been sent back in time to the year 1994 (By John Connor himself) to protect him from an advanced T1000 mimetic poly-aloy terminator (Robert Patrick). Sarah Conner meanwhile has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital run by the slimy Doctor Silberman.
The main story is a tale of friendship between John Connor and his Terminator almost along the same lines of say 'E.T.' but with tons of action and carnage. There is a brilliant canal chase sequence involving John Connor and the two terminators - This will have you biting your nails.
The film is very dramatic, it explores the dark side of human nature - It's not the machines that are bad it's the people that made them. This element is further enhanced by the fact that Sarah Connor goes out to murder another human being 'Miles Dyson' who has inadvertantly created the lethal machines. But Miles has tried to create something that would help humanity not destroy it - It's the actual system of events that followed on Judgement Day that have led to mankinds near destruction - So in actual fact Sarah is about to kill an innocent family man.
There are some touching scenes between John Connor and the T800 - One scene has John trying to explain the value of human life - Something which the machine doesn't understand. And another scene has John teaching him to smile.
James Cameron's direction is superb - He is one of the few directors along with John Woo - Who has the ability to make an action movie extremely believable and dramatic. Terminator 2 has moments of suspense which are further enhanced by some great performances from Edward Furlong, Sarah Connor and of course Arnold Schwarzenneger (In what must be his favourite role.).
The soundtrack by Brad Feidel is also superb, it's use is subtle and is never overpowering. The ILM special effects still look fantastic even though the film is now 10 years old!
The DVD comes rammed with many features - It has many production featurettes - Storyboards, interviews and an excellent THX opimization feature so you can test your speakers are working to the max effect. The presentation is also cool - You are led nicely to the menus with some brilliant 3D graphics - Check out the war torn futuristic scene you fly through on your way to one of the menus or the factory machine which is building T800s on a production line.
This DVD comes packed with three different versions of the movie! The Theatrical Version, The Special Edition and The Special Extended Edition - Featuring some never before seen footage.
Anyone who owns a DVD player must get this - It is perfect.
