Here is a DVD I never thought I would end up writing a review about. My darling husband has been playing the Tenacious D album in the car constantly for about 3 months and I have grown so tired of hearing it that it is starting to drive me slowly insane. So when he came home today and proudly announced that he had bought the DVD, I was less than happy about it. I have to admit though, that I do like Jack Black and find him to be quite funny so decided that, in the interest of providing you all with a decent review on this, I would actually sit down and watch this film with him.
We paid about £14 for this (I have to make a rough guess as I buy DVD's in Euros and so have to work it out according to the exchange rate of the day). My advice is to shop around as you are bound to find this cheaper on the internet.
***The Film***
JB (Jack Black) lives at home with his family, but he is really the black sheep of the family, as the rest of them are very religious and he is devoted to rock, which his father (Meatloaf) thinks is the devils work. So JB runs away from home after having a "vision" from one of his posters. The movie then shifts into "the present day" where he meets KG (Kyle Gass) and after some trepidation (and mummy stopping sending him money) KG and JB form their own band. JB states that it should be called "Tenac" as he has a birth mark on his rear end, but KG also has a rear-end birthmark and so Tenacious D is born.
After trying out at the open microphone night, JB and KG decide to compete in the final to win their rent money. But realise that they need an "edge" on the competition. They discover that the legends of rock seem to all have a similar guitar pick and so set out to buy one. At the music store, they meet aging rocker/sales assistant (played by Ben Stiller) who informs them that this is the "Pick of Destiny" and whoever owns this pick will have unlimited success as it is the tooth of satan!
And so they decide to rob the Rock N Roll History Museum to get this pick and win the competition. So starts a rollercoaster adventure involving a rather dubious customer in the roadside cafe (Tim Robbins) and Big Foot! Will they get the Pick of Destiny? Will they win the competition? Will they stay together or be driven apart by greed and lust? It's all in the film.

***DVD Extras***
1 - Deleted/Extended Scenes - As it suggests these are the scenes that were deleted from the final movie and some that have been extended. To be honest, I felt that none of them would have enhanced the film that much, but it was interesting to watch.
2 - Feature Commentary With Jack Black and Kyle Gass - At times this commentary was funny, but I am not a fan of commentaries and so I quickly got bored with this.
3 - Feature Commentary with Director Liam Lynch - Another commentary on the same film! Again, I did watch this but, like the other commentary, I was quickly bored.
4 - The Making of Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny - Quite interesting in parts and also quite funny.
5 - In The Studio - As the title suggests, this was a look inside the studio. Again quite funny in parts.
6 - The Making of the Music Video - I have to say that I skipped this one as I wasn't really that interested in this part but for someone who does hold a passing interest in this - I could imagine it being interesting for them.
7 - Music Video - A music video, and actually I ended up tapping my feet!
8 - Jump To a Song - here you can "jump to a song".
9 - Trailers - As it suggests this is the trailers for the movie.
You also have the normal scene selection on this DVD.
***My Opinion***
I do like Jack Black and find him to be a very funny guy, and I also do like Ben Stiller, as he is one of the funnies actors I have seen in a long time. Kyle Gass is someone who I had never heard of until I heard of Tenacious D so cannot comment on his previous abilities with regards to comedic film. I would not even go so far as to call this just a comedy film - it is also aspiring at the musical film as well, with plenty of music and song interprersed with the acting.
However, I did find this film enormously funny. Whether it was actually the film itself, or just me blowing off steam after a stressful couple of days I will probably never know, but I did find myself having a blooming good laugh at the antics of Black and Gass. At times, they are so pathetic it is hilarious and at others they do try to be serious but it just ends up being funny again. I know that this is what the film is trying to do, make you laugh the whole way through but it really did work for me. I was surprised to see Meatloaf as he is really not being that well heard of nowadays but it was a real treat (and he gets to sing!).
Black is his usual funny self, while Gass really provides the straight man sidekick performance, and they both do their parts exceptionally well. Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller are also exceptional in their performances, albeit that they are only in the movie in short parts. Meatloaf is great as daddy but again, only for a short part in the beginning. The movie mainly centres around Black and Gass but the other characters are not completely ignored so it is very watchable.
There is a lot of swearing (as you would associate with the rock culture) and drug use as well, so I really would agree with the certification on this film as younger viewers would possibly see this as a confirmation of the acceptability of bad language and drugs. There were times I found myself cringing at what was going on, but it was more embarrassment for the cast rather than disgust at what was happening in the film.
Do I recommend this to you all. Well, yes I do, but only with a 3 star rating. This has lost two stars due to the amount of swearing, drug use and the fact that you can only get it in english. For the Jack Black fan, I would say that this is a must-see but if you are indifferent to him, then it really won't hurt to give it a miss. Will I watch it again? Yes but not in a hurry. My hubby however, will probably watch it again and again.

...quite a big fan of Tenacious D - they've always had a comic charm, and hilarious musicianship to boot. When i heard they were making a film, i was dubious as i'd seen their 'Complete Masterworks' series, and i didn't think it fitted their characters.
Don't get me wrong, there's something hilarious about Jack and Kyle in Kiss style makeup, two slightly portly blokes with guitars claiming 'We didn't mean to blow your mind - that s*** happens to us ... ...see older jokes from the first album coming back, as well as some cracking music, but it is a shame that i do not believe that the film itself would appear as even mediocre without the music.

Advantages: The start and the end was good, some great music Disadvantages: Unoriginal for Tenacious D, middle was boring.
...am a great fan of Tenacious D, and unfortunately, I found that a large portion of the film was very unoriginal. It seemed that an awfully large portion of the film was taken from the old Tenacious D material, especially the ‘Cock push-ups’ joke, taken from the popular debut album. The HBO episodes (of Tenacious D trying to make it big, believe it or not!) have had a lot taken out and used in the film, which I will explain slightly later.
I did point ... ...amazing. Being a Tenacious D fan, I enjoyed parts of the film, but guess that if you do not know the previous Tenacious D material, you may not enjoy it as much. However, the jokes may seem funnier, if you have not heard them before. The beginning is good, the ending is good, but unfortunately the middle is rather awful. It actually took me a lot of will power to decide not to turn it off! Therefore, I would not really recommend buying the DVD, which ...

...view of knowing nothing about Tenacious D, but being a fan of Jack Black in School of Rock, and enjoying spoofs such as Spinal Tap, Wayne's World and Bill and Ted.
So, based on the above, it seemed reasonable to rent this DVD. I thought I was in for a treat. What a mistake.
What we have here is 90 minutes of the most turgid, pre-teen toilet and tits 'n' ass humour imaginable. The film is a 15 certificate, but it's an unwatchable embarrassment for ... ...ruined by too-obvious gags, unfunny prat falls and overlong, self-indulgent scenes (the mushroom trip sequence with Sasquaatch being a prime example).

...half has got quite into Tenacious D lately so we rented this DVD form Tesco Dvd Rentals, which was free as I've currently got a 14 day free trial with them.
Who Are Tenacious D
Tenacious D are a band made up of actor Jack Black and Kyle Gass (he\'s also an actor but from what I can gather has only really had bit parts)
Story
Jack Black plays himself or (JB as he refers to himself in the film). The film starts with JB as a child who just wants ... ...off well but it all gets a bit too silly towards the end. It\'s fun yet predictable. It doesn\'t take itself too seriously and thats the whole point of the film. I would recommend highly to rock fansand especially Tenacious D fans but anybody else just wouldn\'t really get it. ...

Amazing comedy!!!!
I didn`t realise that "Ross" from "Friends" was such a good director!!
The basic story is
Guy leaves pregnant wife at the altar and makes a run for it!!!!Now he is faced with the challenge of running a marathon in order to get her back!!The thing is.....he smokes.....has a beer belly....and he is ot very good at running!!
In Order to help him, he has the help of his tenant, an Indian chubby fellow and his crazy gambling crazed friend!
The best part is the point where he discovers that he has a huge postule on the sole of his foot and his Irish friend has to breakit for him!

DVD Description
Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s Tenacious D began life on an amusing yet little-seen TV series about the band, which featured an array of comedy songs and glimpses into the personal lives of this hard-working outfit. But Black and Gass always had ambitions to take the Tenacious D concept further, so after a hefty bout of touring and recording comes the natural next step in their plans for world domination--a full-length feature film.
The movie is directed by long-time collaborator Liam Lynch, and follows the duo as their megalomaniacal plans for the band burst into life. The film begins with a step back in time, where we find Black travelling to California with a head full of rock & roll dreams, and Gass strumming away on a lonely sidewalk. Once Black and Gass meet, they recognize that their Black Sabbath-sized dreams will only be realized if they can get hold of a magical guitar pick belonging to a local rock & roll-themed museum. But the portly rockers find a sizable hole burnt into their plans when their attempts at stealing the pick are thwarted by its original owner--Beelzebub himself. Existing fans who have seen the original HBO show will doubtless recognize the bulk of this story, as most of the ideas in THE PICK OF DESTINY have been rehashed from older Tenacious D material. But it’s always a pleasure to see Jack Black embrace his inner rock god, and he frequently lets loose on the ridiculously silly songs that make up the Tenacious D oeuvre as the movie progresses. THIS IS SPINAL TAP still has the rock-satire genre tightly sewn up, but Black and Gass make a fun and entertaining addition to the canon with this first big-screen outing for Tenacious D.
