Story -------- Waters (willis) and his team are sent into Nigeria to rescue a Dr & a few nuns/priests from a mission/hospital. When they get there they won't leave without taking all the injured people with them. Waters lies and takes them to the drop point, manages to get them out of there with only a few of the injured but ends up going back for the rest after a crisis of conscience.
The next 90 minutes follows the group trying to escape to the border while escaping the local rebels. (and a surprise bit but I wont spoil that)
Characters ----------------
Waters - Willis struggles in a role that isn't quite john mclane(die hard) & isn't quite james Cole (12 monkeys). I felt nothing for him, you get no real sense of why he disobeys orders to save the refugees, he hints that he will tell all later when his men ask but you never find out. There seems to be something going on but you never get to the bottom of it, at least he doesn't end up snogging Monica B!!!
Dr Kendricks - We jump into her life living in a mission helping refugees but other than finding out that her husband was there at some point too but died, that's all we find out about her.Towards the end all the refugees have a cry and tell her how much they love her but
there's no depth to the character and I had no feeling towards her other than annoyance that she was some sort of busy body doo-gooder on a gap year. As a so called Dr, her skills seemed to be very minimal, one scene showed her looking at a refugees injured foot with all the intensity of a PG Tips monkey. Very poor but very pretty-makes me wonder if she was a pre-requisite for Willis to sign up to the film
Captain Bill Rhodes - About as realistic a Captain as I am a Colonel (honorary title that comes with my Earlhood- I have never seen action). He came across as a serous version of the police captain we used to see in 70's cop shows who would bawl out the 'out on a limb cops' whenever they trashed another car.The scens with him on the aircraft carrier (especially ones of planes taking off) looked like stock footage & didnt fit in with the feel of the rest of the film. I didnt see any reason for him to be stood outside whil e the planes were taking off other than to annoy me and make me turn the volume up to hear the dialogue or to make the most of having permission to film on an aircraft carrier.
Patience (a refugee) - Star of the show(in a way). How did she manage to keep her lip quivering for so long. I was gripped whenever she was on the screen, waiting for her to have those jets of water squirting from her eyes or that interminable lip shake. I haven't seen such over emotive acting since 4th form drama lessons. The best laugh of the film.
The rest of the 'Navy seals unit' - well, what can I say, unmemorable but CRAZY nicknames (check them out in the cast list)
Opinion ------------
Go on , guess! I am not a fan of this film.
dull dull dull
it jumps straight into the mission after a brief news broadcast why is she important? what do we know about the navy seals? After they set off having tricked the Dr, all it takes is a flyover the mission and her wailing & they set off back to pick them up. At this point I was expecting romance to blossom between Willis/Belucci but fortunately it didn't get that bad.
and how powerful a rank is willis? how can he sanction changing the mission on a whim?we found out nothing about him so I can only speculate -He is Bruce Willis & they have recognised him as such?
Maybe his power comes from the fact that once he changes the plan we get a few close ups of Monica's cleavage? This was the only time it was on show ( I checked) and as I said above, I was expecting a romantic aspect to the film.
the first half hour was very dull & unlike me, I almost turned it off. The only thing keeping me watching were the clichés which always make a film like this more entertaining.
1) a child was crying - they almost get caught 2) Comedy relief moment - it wasn't the enemy, it was a wild boar -man gets shot(ooops, didn't make me jump, was it supposed to?) 3) man with artificial leg gets shot - in the artificial leg 4) NO DON'T TOUCH THAT - bomb goes off 5) man about to be shot - cut to birds flying from tree & sound of gunshot
It started off with realistic(if not real?) footage and I thought it may be a decent if oft played story but tailed off very quickly. The Countess refused to watch this film as she is sensative to any sort of violence in films(mild peril being ok eg rugrats the movie) but there wansnt anything too graphic in this one. There was some amazing scenery in the film but finding out it was Hawaii and not Nigeria kind of spoiled this - If I wanted to watch a nature program I would..........etc The soundtrack was quite haunting though & I did find myself a little bit on the edge of my seat during some of the more tense moments but that could just be down to the mood I was in tonight.
Overall - watch 3 kings or the wild geese (In my opinion) 4/10
