Team America: World Police is the latest film from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, better known as the creative geniuses behind South Park. If you've seen South Park, you'll know what you're in for here.
The film is about Gary Johnston, a popular Broadway actor who is recruited by Team America, a counter terrorism force, a group of the best of the best, to help them in the global war against terrorism. They need him to infiltrate a terrorist cell and find out what they're planning next. This is a more personal mission for Team America as they lost one of their own in Paris during an attack. Along the way Gary has to contend with celebrities, his own failures, and love along the way, but will he be able to pull himself together and help save the day?
The puppets in this film are all excellently made, with lots of facial and joint movement. Some scenes as well are epic, with lots of different puppets on screen walking around at one time. They really wanted to show how good a marionette film could be, and they delivered.
The humour is classic Matt and Trey, that is to say, completely crude and offensive, and I wouldn't have it any other way. They really like to push the boundaries of what is acceptable (I don't think anyone will forget the sex scene) and trying to be original as well. There are laughs a plenty, whether it's mocking America, it's standing in the world or it's foreign policy, or just these kinds of movies, where a young hot shot outsider wins the girl, kills the bad guy and does it with nothing more than his talent and a bunch of corny one liners. There are lots of memorable moments, mostly involving bodily fluids, but it's with puppets so it's less disgusting somehow.
Another thing Matt and Trey do very well is songs, and they don't let up here. From "Everyone Has Aids", "America, F*ck Yeah" and "I'm So Ronery" (Sung by Kim Jong Il in a wonderful bit of melancholy) each one is brilliantly silly, memorable and genius.
They also lampoon, with actors from the Film Actors Guild (think about it) protesting the way Team America do things. Their behavior is excellently captured, whether it's Sean Penn declaring how much of a paradise Iraq was before Team America messed it up, and how corporations are the source of all evil. The funniest is Matt Damon, who can only say his name in a slightly 'slow' way. Apparently he was going to be very intelligent, but when Matt and Trey saw the puppet, they thought he "looked retarded" so they decided to go another way.
You can purchase this for less than a tenner on amazon, which is a bargain. Extras include outtakes, deleted and extended scenes and multiple featurettes. An essential watch for anyone who likes their humour slightly 'out there'.

I'm sorry for the H, but for this to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in the same detail as your review of the film, not just a list of them.
