Belle Williams has struggled for five years to get her New York taxi licence, so imagine her despair when she picks up an incompetent cop called Washburn, who tries to foil a bank robbery, but ends up getting her into all sorts of trouble, both with the police and her boyfriend. With nowhere to go for the night, she ends up having to sleep over at Washtub's and becomes more involved in trying to stop the bank robbery than she would otherwise have liked. Will she keep her taxi licence, and, more importnatly, her boyfriend? And will Washburn be able to persuade his lieutenant that he doesn't deserve to be given the sack?
Queen Latifah stars in this film as Belle, and frankly, without her, this film would have totally bombed. As it is, she saves it, but only just. I haven't seen her in many films, but she does have the most amazing screen presence and an ability to make me laugh without doing or saying anything particularly funny. As Belle, she is a feisty go-getter who just won't give up and in this role, she is perfect. I certainly can't imagine her as the shy, retiring type.
Jimmy Fallon, who plays Washburn, is completely overshadowed by Queen Latifah. His role is weak, his lines are weak and his acting isn't all that hot either. He has one of those nondescript faces that I will never remember again. He seems like a nice guy, but that's about the best I can do for him.
Gisele Bundchen, supermodel extraordinaire plays Vanessa, one of the female bank robbers. I wasn't expecting much from her, which is just as well, because her role requires her to look good and nothing else. Look good she certainly does, and, for the men, there's almost some girl on girl action! I can't see her acting career progressing as a result of this film though.
Jennifer Esposito, who plays Lieutenant Marta Robbins deserves a mention, if only to say that she is dreadful in the role. To be fair though, I'm sure the director and screenplay writers are at least partially responsible for this.
I thought the plot was just about as bad as it could get. There really was very little to it and huge sections were filled out with car chases, which I generally found very boring and visually confusing because of the way they were filmed. There was one great chase towards the end though. Three cars are travelling at high speed while passing a bag of money and a live woman between them. This was very well done and certainly woke me up.
Script-wise, I thought it was pretty weak. There are a few funny lines, mainly restricted to Queen Latifah, and a couple of actions that made me laugh, but all in all, I only laughed out loud about four times - not good for a film that is classed as a comedy. Much of the time, I found my attention wandering because many of the characters spoke English with a foreign accent and although I'm generally used to hearing English spoken in such a way, I found I missed a lot of the dialogue.
I chose this film because I was watching with friends and we wanted something light-hearted and didn't involve too much thinking. From that point of view, the film more or less delivered. This is only the second film that I have seen starring Queen Latifah, but I will definitely be looking for more - it's good to see a movie star who isn't stick thin and has done well for her acting skills. On the other hand, I doubt I will ever watch this film again - the plot and script were just too weak. Recommended, just, to while away a couple of hours if you are bored, but there are much better films out there.
I watched the film only version, but the DVD is available from play.com for £4.99.

...up with a newly qualified taxi driver (Belle Williams) and her super charged and modified taxi cab after flagging it down to attempt to stop bank thieves. After the initial chase Andy gets suspended and the taxi cab is confiscated from Belle because of all the modifications present. The film then concentrates on the plight of both Andy and Belle, will Andy catch the beautiful Brazilian bank thieves and will Belle get her taxi back to do it with? ... ...but from this performance in Taxi I am mystified to how she could have ever been nominated for an Oscar. In addition Jimmy Fallon who played Washburn was even worse in his attempts to make some of the poor jokes appear funny. Also the Brazilian bank robbers appeared to find it hard to speak English, perhaps this was just meant to be put on but it was very frustrating listening to the attempts.
As I have already said this film was modeled on the ...

,.-¬*''*¬-.,¸¸,.- Taxi (2004) -.,¸¸,.-¬*''*¬-., Taxi is a hilarious action film directed by Tim Story, set in and around New York city in America, brought to us by 20th Century Fox. Taxi is an American re-make of the original French "Taxi" created by Luc-Besonn, which was a major hit across France. The film has a 15 rating, the box saying it had Moderate language and Sex references, I noticed a lot of the mild language but that was really it. During the car chases, the police were chasing the Bank Robbers car, but they didn't seem at all interested in a supercharged Taxi following the Bank Robbers car at speeds over 100 mph through the city! The limit for me was when Belle changed the steering wheel while driving down a crowded street over 100 mph, without even taking a glance at the road. As for the humour, it takes an acquired taste to appreciate ...

The films starts off well, with some lovely stunts and some good humour. However, it all slightly goes downhill and begins to remind you of your average American Teen Movie. The script is just too unoriginal and their "twists" are exactly what we're sitting on our sofa expecting.

Advantages: None I can think of. Well, maybe the good looking bandits! Disadvantages: Drastic acting.
~ ~ About three years ago or so I watched a couple of foreign language DVD's (French) called "Taxi" and the sequel "Taxi 2" by the French writer and producer Luc Besson, who is probably best known for the movie "Leon". (1994) Both were highly amusing comedies that lost little by being subtitled, and indeed I have watched both of them again since then to while away a pleasant couple of hours in front of the old gogglebox. So when I read that the original film had been remade and released on DVD in an English language version it was a nap that I was going to purchase and watch the DVD at some stage.
As it transpires this was to prove to be a very bad mistake.
~ ~ The remake was released on DVD by Fox in April 2005 and starred (if you can call it that) Jimmy Fallon, a so-called comedian whose main claim to fame appears to be as a stand ...

screens also didn't like it being a journeyman Mister Anonymous director, but who had heard of the original's? He's let down by just some of the script, but makes the most of what he has, given he had the job of remaking such a unique film. The Psycho reshoot this isn't.
There's a great 2-disc DVD pack of the first 2 Taxi films that is often in HMV sales for about £8. If you want to own the film, that is the way to have it. But in the meantime, this is now on our cinema screens, and if you wish for something larky, fun and enjoyable to help the gallons of popcorn go down, this really will work.
Beforehand : not recommended, bound to be changed into a miscast, worthy American saccharine remake with none of the zest of the original.
After seeing it : recommended, surprisingly good fun. Surprisingly good leads, and the car stunt work ...

for a long time with strength, no sign of pain and true determination. Someone what does this is a psycho.
As this is a dvd opinion I've waffled on a bit about the film but even that just skims the surface of the film. So onto the virtues of the shiny disc.
The film was made in 1976 so we are looking at 25 years of print age and I'd imagine this wasn't a high budgeted picture in the first place. Still Taxi Driver looks great on dvd in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. Obviously there is grain and dirt in the image but that's what the film is about, it adds flavour. The muted and washed out colour scheme holds up very well making this the best way to see the film apart from a cinema print.
The sound mix is in Dolby Digital 2.0. There is no 5.1 remix and to be honest I wouldn't see the benefit. You're hearing the soundtrack in the closest ...
Jimmy Fallon gets his first starring role with TAXI, an action-packed comedy that finds the former Saturday Night Live showman teaming up with Oscar-nominated rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah (CHICAGO). Fallon is Washburn, a truly pathetic New York City cop who can't seem to wake up in the morning without bumbling busts and breaking whatever he touches. After his most recent debacle, his boss and former flame, Lieutenant Marta Robbins (Jennifer Esposito), revoked his license. Latifah is Belle, a retired bike messenger who is about to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a bona fide cab driver. When Fallon commandeers Belle's services after hearing of a nearby bank robbery, a partnership is formed. Unfortunately, even when he means well, Washburn is nothing but trouble. Against her better judgment, Belle finds herself doing what she can to help out the pitiful Washburn, even though the bank robbers (led by supermodel Gisele Bundchen) are several steps ahead of the game. Produced by Luc Besson, who wrote the 1998 film upon which Tim Story's film is based, TAXI is an engaging romp that features likeable performances from its lead actors, as well as hilarious supporting turns from Ann-Margret and Adrian Martinez.
