Advantages: An aesthetically pleasing collection Disadvantages: Some rather poor inclusions
A selection of classic Hammer films from the very good to...not so good. An aesthetically pleasing set for fans of the studio, or those wanting at least half of the titles. Features star favourites Peter Cushing, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress and Christopher Lee (about whom there is an interesting documentary with 'Scars of Dracula').
The extra features vary greatly, the biggest ommission, in my opinion, is the total absence of subtitles for the hearing impaired.
For those who are interested all films are anamorphic, some for the first time, and completely uncut.
My personal favourite was the inclusion of the 1965 film 'The Nanny' which stars a very chilling Bette Davis in a well scripted, and often overlooked role.
Probably a tad overpriced for most, but new DVD versions of individual films are also available, so take ...
Advantages: Incredible direction, performances and writing. Disadvantages: None.
shorter. It's uncomfortable, disturbing - as is the film as a whole.
Similarly brilliant are Shepherd and Foster and, as the latter's pimp, Harvey Keitel.
Any Modern Classic approached for the first time will appear to groan and buckle under weight of accumulated praise and analysis scribbled or spoken in its name over the years, and TaxiDriver is no different. If you CAN, though, put all that aside, pretend you've never heard a single person misquoting that "You talkin' to me?" business, imagine you've read none those Best Films Of All Time lists, imagine this is the first time you ever heard tell of a film about Taxi Driving that wasn't part of the Confessions... series, approach it fresh and not as some relic from the 1970s and it will be reveal itself to be a picture as relevant as anything released this year.
For this is ...

DVD Description
Martin Scorsese's intense film, a hallmark of 1970s filmmaking, graphically depicts the tragic consequences of urban alienation when a New York City taxi driver goes on a murderous rampage against the pitiable denizens inhabiting the city's underbelly. For psychotic, pistol-packing Vietnam vet Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), New York City seems like a circle of hell. Driving his cab each night through the bleak Manhattan streets, Bickle observes with fanatical loathing the sleazy lowlifes who comprise most of his fares. By day he haunts the porno theaters of 42nd Street, taking his cues from the violent vision of life portrayed in these movies. As badly as Travis wants to connect with the people around him--including Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a lovely blonde campaign worker, and Iris (Jodie Foster), a prepubescent prostitute he tries to save--his attempts are thwarted and his pent-up rage grows, turning him into a Mohawk-wearing walking time bomb. Paul Schrader's screenplay is filmed with a tragic realism by Scorsese, which brilliantly captures the muck and grime of New York City. De Niro, playing the fragile hero, steps inside his role so far that the results are deeply frightening. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score--which turned out to be his last--completes the urban nightmare.
