Brilliant stuff. It's a very quirky film, but not the sort of film for macho insecure louts. They'll detest it. Happy guys and mischievous girlies will love it though.
Background:
Tank Girl is a character from a strip in 'Deadline' comics. A tough bitch basically, toned down a lot for this film, but made more fun by Lori Petty and her voice. It's set in the future where the Earth has been hit by a meteor, and it hasn't rained for years. Thus whoever controls the water controls the power. In Australia, where this is set, that's the 'Department of Water and Power'. The comics were basically about Tank Girl and her friends bumming around and keeping themselves in beer. For the film version, a plot has been artificially grafted on - pretty badly.
Summary:
The film is enjoyable, but leaves a lot to be desired.
Stuff:
The make up of the Rippers (half human/half kangaroo genetic creations) is impressive on the face (Ice-T has never looked better), but they look far too human underneath it all. Also the Ripper characters are so diverse, they don't really work together.
The first half of the film concerns Tank Girl getting her tank, and then fixing it up - and likewise with Jet Girl. However, no-one could care less.It would work just as well if she'd always had the tank. The film wastes time here. Also, a lot of work goes into converting a stolen aircraft into Jet Girl's jet form the comic (and ends up unbelievably different from the aircraft they started with) only to have it fail to turn up in one scene, then be converted back into the old form for the finale. What is going on here?
The Tank:
Good to look at. It's a Stewart/Abrams (I think) - the sort the US put into Southern Europe in WWII. In the comics, the tank was squat, but with the turret right at the back and a stumpy barrel. This one's much better. To get away from the thing's 'conical' appearance, the back end of a cadillac(I've been informed that it's a '69 Eldorado, apparently) has been welded on to make a rear deck, on which is placed a patio umbrella, barbecue and comfy chairs. Chain guns, rocket launchers, a bow-and-arrow, and even a water pistol are fitted on the turret, and the barrel is ridiculously long. The tank drives itself, responds to whistles, and shakes its turret or blinks its lights in response to questions. However, none of the armaments pop out from hatches, or move much, so it's not as cool as it could be. We also see far too little of the tank.
The song and dance :
Yep, there's a song and dance routine. Quite a good one. And if you can't stand Cole Porter, there's a slightly more upbeat version of the song on the end credits. Lori Petty looks great doing high-kicks in a chorus line, showing her underwear (baggy white patterned boxer shorts!).
The cartoony bits :
To cut between scenes, or for a bit of useful surreal emphasis, the view sometimes pans around large drawings, drawn by the original comic artist. These are colourful, and work well. What doesn't work so well are some animated sequences. Drawn in red/black/white they show Tank Girl fixing up her tank, and the whole finale of the film is done like this. These sequences get a bit too surreal at times, and don't really fit in with the rest of the film. They also make the finale seem a bit irrelevant.
The characters :
Fairly two-dimensional. Everyone's what you expect. The only character that changes is Jet Girl, who wises-up a bit, but that's fairly obvious from the start. The rippers have character, but no work is done with those characters. Everyone just is. Interaction/meshing/clashing of characters is non-existant. Having said that, Tank Girl's character is great.
The plot :
Pardon? Okay, it's naff. Capture/escape/capture/escape etc... from the Department of Water and Power. Attack with the help of the stolen vehicles and the Rippers...
Advantages: This film is brill Disadvantages: storyline is a bit weak
I've read some of the Tank Girl comics, and this movie is quite a watered-down portrayal of that anarchistic, violent, anything-goes universe. That said, I still like the movie and of course I own a copy. The movie is a bit...ok - dumb...but what do you want? It was a low budget adaptation dripping in melodrama and tongue-in-cheek goofiness. The movie has simply stayed true to its source material, and there's something to be said for that.... If ... ...world as we know it. Tank Girl (Rebecca) and her friends are the only remaining citizens living in the wasteland that is Earth, where all the remaining water is controlled by Water and Power, the mega corporation (government) who runs the territory. While incarcerated at W + P, Tank Girl and her new friend Jet break out and steal...go on, guess... yep, you got it - a tank and a jet (weird that!). After meeting some mutant kangaroos (one of which ...

Advantages: good visuals, fairly entertaining Disadvantages: they just got it all wrong, dull plot, average acting
...The original idea of Tank Girl came from a comic strip created by Jamie Hewlett (who now does the drawings for the Virgin Coke ad's) and Peter Milligan. The strip used to appear in the now defunct cult magazine 'Deadline' and was a masterpiece of hilariously cool, not giving a f**k culture. The amount of intelligence behind the comic strip seems to have totally eluded the people who made it into a film as they turned it into a fairly feeble sci-fi ... ...film Lori Petti stars as tank girl. This was the wrong choice of star in my opinion as she is just to 'girly' for this kind of role. That may sound a bit sexist but the Tank Girl from the comic, when confronted by a ninja assassin with a massive penis, kills him by getting her tit's out and causing all the blood to rush from his body into his erection. That's the kind of comedy hardcore that should have gone into this film and Lori Petti just isn't ...

...its quite entertaining. Tank Girl is based on the comic Tank Girl, I've never really read comics, but these days seem to have a soft spot for film adaptations of them, I enjoyed Batman, The X-men, Spawn and I like this, though I gather it didn’t do so well at the cinema. I’ve seen this a few of times and have had it on tape for a while, so why you may ask, did I buy it on DVD?, well, after buying a DVD player and wanting some good films ... ...and I suddenly thought of Tank Girl. At the time it was only there as a pre order, and there were no extra’s. But as it was due to come out I considered that they would probably add a few before it was released and they did, the trailer, that’s it, hardly worth getting out of bed for is it?. It would also explain why it came so reasonably priced for a region 2 DVD at £14.99. OK so that not all the extra's but the rest are just interactive ...

Advantages: The funniest film ever! Disadvantages: Not enough people have seen it
...W&P kinap Rebeccas (adopted) daughter, Tank girl and co need a plan to get her back, and they decide to team up with the Rippers, a rejected Army of kangaroo like people, one of whom is played by Ice T. As you can tell from the above summary, this is a very strange and original film. However, it never even considers taking itself particularly seriously, and provides an hour and a half of hilarious entertainment. The movie is full of surprises. Many ... ...shorts, which surprisingly only add to the film. The humour is raw, slighlty rude at times, but undoubtedly absolutely hilarious. The camerawork is excellently done, and adds to the films novelty value, while the acting is more than satisfactory. The sets are not the most impressive ever, but that just isn't important in a film like this. I do, however, have one big fear with this film. Many people have been put off by the title and their preconceived ...

DVD Description
In the year 2033, the world's water supply is controlled by Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell), a maniacal dictator who presides over the Water & Power company. Tank Girl (Lori Petty), a tough punk water poacher, struggles alongside her comrades to deliver the valuable resource to parched persons around the globe. But when Tank Girl is captured by Kesslee, he makes her work as one of his human automatons in the W & P mines. Her fate goes from bad to worse when Kesslee makes her a proposition: She can go free if she agrees to exterminate the ravenous Rippers--half-man, half-kangaroo beasts. But before she's forced to answer, along comes Jet Girl (Naomi Watts), who rescues Tank Girl from Kesslee's clutches. Now these two spunky chicks will do whatever it takes to destroy Kesslee and hydrate the desert planet. The film is based on the comic book by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett.
