The plot
The film starts with the birth of Ricky Bobby – in a fast car. Dad (Gary Cole) is drunk but a mad racer. He doesn’t appear in the early stages of Ricky Bobby’s life but when he does at a school parents day he says to Ricky the only way to live is to be first (not last).
Several years later Ricky Bobby works in a pit crew for the NASCAR (Indianapolis 500) races. He’s a plain chap and has a best friend Cal (John C. Reilly), they have been mates at school for years. The existing driver decides not to finish a race and Ricky takes over and comes third in the race. He then becomes the main driver and starts to win everything. He becomes NASCAR\\\'s most popular and famous driver, and nearly every aspect of his life is endorsed by a recognisable product.
He gets a blond wife, 2 uncontrollable kids and life is good, however it is all compromised by the appearance of Jean, who beats him in the races. (There is a hilarious scene in the bar when he first of all shows up with his boyfriend!)
Life goes down hill for Ricky Bobby – he ends up working in a pizza delivery shop, the rest of the film is about how he can regain his self esteem and maybe win a NASCAR race again – I won’t detail too much as this would ruin quite a funny film.
Summary - I thought that it was funny, although my partner didn’t see some of the jokes. You do not have to be an expert in NASCAR to watch this. I would recommend the DVD for a light entertainment evening, over a couple of beers.
