The plot is based on Ursala K LeGuin's Earthsea books in particular the third volume entitled the farthest shore.
The movie begins with a group of men out at sea in a vicious storm witnessing a gargantuan battle between two titanic dragons, one of which is killed in the process, when this information gets back to the king of the land he is greatly disturbed.
This was an extremely bad omen for his country and on top of that his only son has gone missing, the kings wizard explains that dragons and men used to be one but dragons chose freedom in the sky where as man chose possessions on the earth, shortly after this the king is murdered by a mysterious youth, this turns out to be his son Arren. The prince steals his father's sword and flees the palace.
After this though movie seems to jump from place to place a lot, although the visuals and music are both stunning the plot seems to be lacking from the traditional studio ghibli magic, it isn't bad exactly just different, the characters could use a little more development, as not enough background to the story is released during the 80 minute stature of the movie.
I thought this was also quite a disappointment because most studio ghibli movies are a lot longer and more expressive in their design.I suppose these accusations are a little critical for somebody who has a lot to live up to though.
It is an interesting plot though and the art and animation style remains true to the studio ghibli format, the music also integrates itself well into the scenes and different environments which range from vast deserts to the ocean.
The dvd comes with a small poster, it contains some disfigurement and scary scenes so i would say a PG is a fair rating because it may scare younger kids.

TalesFromEarthsea is a first film from Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's Son. For his first ever film, it isn't too bad. It recieved many negative reviews and Goro recieved the Worst Director Award. It was his first film and try, i mean give him a break! There are worse directors than him!
Arren is a prince who kills his own father and runs away from his home, stealing his epic sword. On the way to a journey of nowhere, he meets Ged, the most powerful wizard in all of Earthsea. Ged is on a mission to protect Arren from Cob, a rival wizard of his who is out to kill Ged and to own Arren.
On the road to anywhere, they meet Therru, a young girl who first ends up hating Arren as he does not appreciate life itself, when he tries to gamble her life whilst being hunted down by soldiers.
Now, Arren must unite with Ged to defeat Cob ...
Advantages: a wonderful first film by the son of the famous Hayao Miyazaki Disadvantages: quite scary and not suitable for younger children
I love Hayao Miyazaki's films, so I was interested to see the first film directed by his son. I had heard a few rather negative opinions about this film, since this is Goro Miyazaki's first venture into directing an animation.
I had quite low expectations, and was very pleasently surprised! It's a wonderful and very atmospheric story, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It may not be as masterful as Goro's father's work, but it's beautiful nonetheless! Timothy Dalton lends his voice to one of the main characters, which fits perfectly. I look forward to seeing future films by Goro Miyazaki!
My only advice is that this looks like a children's talefrom the cover of the DVD, but it's very very dark and scary, so I wouldn't recommend it to children under 12, maybe 10. ...

this is a very touching film. it is about a place called earthea that is full of wizards. when dragons are spotted and one killed by the other the people of earthsea become wierd and wizards are staring to loose there power. prince arren, upon killing his dad, the king, runs away and runs into Sparrowhawk, a very powerfull wizard who is trying to solve the reason why these strange things are happening. But arren is also acting starnge and does things that he can't control even when he has to look after young teru. Now all teamed up they try and solve and fix the balance. This was a truley amazing film to watch. I have brought this dvd and i have not stopped watching it. i recommend that evryone can watch this. and it made me cry and it really bringd you into it. this is for any age and a good film to keep for ever ...
