DoubleExposure - Carol Smith
This is my very first review so I hope I manage it ok!
I'm not a great reader, but recently I came across this book in a local charity shop for 50 pence, and thought I would try it.
It's a paperback version and around 380 pages in length. The line on the front cover is simple: "Can you trust a stranger?" It has a brief synopsis about the writer, and basically she is English and she became a Literary Agent as well as writing her own material.
The story.
Basically this revolves around seven strangers who meet while on holiday in the Caribbean. The meetings result is some strange friendships that subsequently develop.
We get to see characters that for various reasons decide to conceal aspects of their life from the others.
The main characters are:
Merrily Morgenstern who works for a New ...
Advantages: Irene Jacob's performance and Kieslowski's direction Disadvantages: Difficult to fathom
price.
The film has a 15 certificate and does contain some sex scenes that are not overly graphic.
The DVD I borrowed was a two-disc collectors' edition, disc two being dedicated to extras. The first of these is an interview with director Krystof Kieslowski (1991) that lasts about fifty-five minutes and includes several excerpts of the shooting of 'The Double Life of Veronique'. Kieslowski talks about film-making in Poland since 1970 as well as about his personal attitudes. He explains that he switched from making documentaries because he was more interested in people's innermost thoughts and feelings. He always wants the various members of the crew to contribute something personal to his films. He talks about our responsibility for other people, and sees the main message of 'The Double Life of Veronique' as being 'live more carefully ...
Advantages: some good plots, a little humour. Disadvantages: sometimes boring.
Although everyone who thinks of Taggart will automatically think of Mark McManus as Jim Taggart, The show is still reasonably good.
I do feel that the dry humour that Mark brought to the show has been lost, and that Blythe Duff and Colin Mcredie don't have the same humour.
Somewhere along the line the show has become a little boring and not as enjoyable as it was.
The plots and murders don't seem the same.
Colin McCredie does not have the flair that Mark McManus had and it lacks some character.
I still like watching it however and enjoy it to a good extent.
There are still the moments of humour between Duff and McCredie, but it will never be the same for me.
When Mark McManus died in 1994 he took the heart of a good drama with him. Having said that it does have moments of brilliance and the fact that it is a purely Scottish ...
