Sydney White played by She's The Man star Amanda Bynes is a girl on her way into college following the footsteps of her oh so popular mother. White senior (now dead) was a legendary pupil at an illustrious school. Sadly Sydney has little in common with her mother and is a bit tomboyish in her style. This is much to the annoyance of to sorority queen Rachel Witchburn, but things get more hostile when it becomes apparent that Witchburn's recent ex boyfriend Tyler Prince is developing a bit of a thing for newcomer Sydney. It's a fight for power as Sydney tries to get the man of her dreams, whilst trying to end a reign of fear on campus, with seven losers in toe Sydney has a challenge on her hands.
Did you notice the cunning wordplay with the character names? That's because Sydney White is a modern day noughties update of the classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. And in fairness it's not a bad retelling of the story with seven geeks replacing dwarves. What is wrong in my eyes is that there is a clear cut off point for where this movie will have its appeal, and that goes in stark contrast from the UK certificate given for the movie. I think my opening comments about the movie not appealing to over 15 year olds might have been me over optimistically giving this movie a bit of credit. I'd actually say that 12 is the cut off point, but 12 is the certificate that this movie has been given. This is most confusing because there is nothing in the movie to warrant the certificate no sex, no swearing, no violence, and no dismissal of anyone's religious beliefs. Anyway there is a bigger audience for this movie than the UK so I'll continue.
Bynes does surprisingly well this time round, I was appalled by her performance in She's The Man stating that I found her hard to believe as a woman let alone a man; but again there are slightly boyish traits her too which leads me to believe this young actress is to some degree being stereotyped already. Sydney has spent her childhood surrounded by builders and plumbers, due to the death of her mother and Bynes as an actress looks surprisingly at home holding a hammer. I do look occasionally at Bynes and feel she is attractive, but those annoying expressions, facial twitches, and an almost Adams apple style neck waddle really put me off; I can honestly see these annoying things making their way into the actresses first big budget serious role, if of course she has the longevity.
The Geeks however are the magic of the movie, one is frequently tired due to being a foreign exchange student not adapting to US time. One is an allergy freak played amiably by rising star Jack Carpenter. There is a touch of Animal House with one of the residents who has overstayed their welcome by seven years. All the geeks have endearing qualities and realistically are the only thing preventing the movie from falling into Sabrina The Teenage Witch style territory.
There are elements of Sydney White that are really bad, bits of random and incredibly bad singing being a big part. There are also highly predictable outcomes to different scenarios that try to create the impression of being clever, and the movie presents this "cleverness" in a very arrogant manner presenting the issue and then almost applauding its cleverness. I seemed to spend so much of the movie looking at the screen open mouthed not really believing what I was watching, and certainly missing a lot of the logic of the piece. Sydney White borrows, or should I say steals so many comic punchlines from classic well known movies it is borderline ridiculous; a catchphrase it's recommend to go along with this movie would be "Mainly old jokes!"
I think I'm probably being far too harsh because I'm pretty sure this movie this movie is aimed at a considerably younger audience than myself, but even with that in mind I have been able to see some great child aimed movies and enjoy elements of them. Sydney White was just far too silly for my liking, and because I was so harsh of Bynes last movie I really wanted to like this, I just could not.
Sydney White opens in UK cinemas from 25th January.
I recently saw the film Sydney White when my friend invited me and a couple of other friends to the cinema. Although I had seen an advert , advertising this movie in a magazine when it was out in the cinemas , I didn't have no idea as to what the film was about although I will admit that I thought it looked appealing. So I was pleased when my friend suggested this movie. We all agreed on seeing this movie.
Sydney White is an American movie by Joe ... ...a PG.
Young girl Sydney White wins a scholarship for college. Her mother died when she was nine , and so she hopes to follow in her footsteps. Now at college , what will happen when she meets seven dorks ? Watch Sydney White to found out.
First of all , I loved the story Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs as a child , so I was delighted to discover that this film is actually based on the same fairytale. I read somewhere that this film was originally ...

Advantages: Wholesome Entertainment for Pre-Teens Disadvantages: Too Cheesy for the Masses
...this movie Amanda Bynes plays Sydney White, a girl going off to college with the ambition of following in her mother's footsteps. Her mother was a member of a popular sorority. Sydney is guaranteed a bid, but the 'mean girl' sorority president refuses to let her in the fraternity. Sydney has no choice but to turn to the dorks. Together with her seven dorks she rises up against the evil popular girls. I am normally a huge fan of Amanda Bynes, but ... ...a bit too overdone.
Sydney White and the seven dorks is all too reminiscent of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. Hardy-har-har. The message of the movie is good, but falls away underneath the overall pathetic attempt at a remake of a classic. Nice try producers, but it's not that all that funny.
Overall, this is a good light-hearted movie probably more suited for pre-teen girls than a larger audience. ...

I have recently become quite a big fan of Amanda Bynes, having enjoyed her two movies ; It's A Boy/Girl Thing and SydneyWhite , and so when I heard about her film 'Lovewrecked' I was eager to see what it was all about.
Lovewrecked is an American film released in the United Kingdom on 18th May 2007. This film was directed by Randal Kleiser and stars Amanda Bynes and Chris Carmack. The film comes under the following genres : Romance , Comedy and Adventure. Running time of this movie is eighty seven minutes (one hour and twenty seven minutes). This movie is a certificated PG.
Jenny thinks she has found the perfect man , however there's a problem ; her man happens to be the world's biggest rock star. Hoping to catch his attention , she takes up a job in his favourite Caribbean island. One night there's a storm , and her crush ...
Advantages: Doesn't require too much thought, watchable at least Disadvantages: Not funny, bland characters, cliched and done before
was when they took off her glasses, who knew?!"
If you have ever seen the movie SydneyWhite (aka Snow White and the Seven Dorks) it is really extremely similar - failing Greek house full of nerds, our heroine meets them in her time of need and helps them out. You get the idea.
CAST
Shelley is played by Anna Faris, probably best known for her role in the Scary Movies, and she plays the dumb blonde very well. She's lovable, ditzy but a go-getter, very much an Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) kind of character. Nothing new here then.
Other than Hugh Hefner himself being around in the Playboy Mansion scenes, there aren't really any other notable cast members. I recognised Emma Stone from Superbad, and Kat Dennings from The 40-Year-Old Virgin amongst others, but these are very much typecast actresses in their typical roles.
VERDICT ...
Advantages: Nice supporting actress Disadvantages: Dire Hilton
; she is sort of airy and detached from emotion and the movie itself; and this brings me onto the guts of the problem, as the leading character of the movie she is strangely vacant. When I say vacant she is not missing from the movie as such, in fact she is in an awful lot of the movies scenes, but as the hottie, she plays second fiddle to the nottie. Even though Hilton is ever present, the movie is made in such a way you can almost cast her out in your mind.
It's this factor that troubles me the most, rather like a previously voted bad movie I Know Who Killed Me starring other hate figure Lindsey Lohan, the film itself is not actually that bad. Granted the movie is nothing new, and a tad predictable but no worse than the likes of She's The Man, Stomp The Yard, SydneyWhite, and Over Her Dead Body, movies that lack anything of any ...
This likable film revives the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) has dreamed of following in her mother's footsteps and being a Kappa Phi Nu sister since she was a little girl. Now a freshman at Southern Atlantic University, this pledge isn't your typical sorority girl. Raised by her widower father (John Schneider) since she was nine, Sydney is more comfortable wielding a power drill than she is power shopping. Unfortunately, this doesn't sit well with the sorority and student body president, Rachel Witchburn (Sara Paxton)--especially when campus stud Tyler Prince (Matt Long) appears smitten with Sydney. Soon, Sydney finds herself living in the 'Vortex,' a makeshift haven on Greek Row for seven misfit male students. A 'dork' at heart herself, Sydney decides to empower her housemates and all the disenfranchised students at the university and take the school back from the fraternities and sororities.

Ms. Bynes, with her cherubic face, expressive eyes and comic timing, helps create a positive, pleasing diversion that caters to the geek in all of us (New York Times, 08/09/2008)
should satisfy Bynes fans looking for a pleasant, innocuous follow-up to her last vehicle (Variety, 08/09/2008)
DVD Description
This likable film from director Joe Nussbaum (SLEEPOVER, AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS: THE NAKED MILE) revives the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. A 'dork' at heart herself, Sydney decides to empower her housemates and all the disenfranchised students at the university and take the school back from the fraternities and sororities.
Each of Sydney's housemates exhibits a trait of the seven dwarves (Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, Doc, Happy, Grumpy, Dopey) and is dorky yet endearing in his own way. Used to being outsiders, Sydney's housemates are invigorated by their new cool, cute friend who genuinely likes them. The ultimate message is that everybody houses an inner dork, and deep down, everyone just wants to feel accepted and appreciated. Bynes's feisty Sydney is refreshing in a world of cookie-cutter girl characters, Paxton is spot-on as witchy campus queen Rachel, and Long is appealing as the campus dreamboat.
