I hadn’t seen a really good film in ages; you know the ones that you would actually go out and buy just so you can watch it again and again. The last film I had obtained so I could watch was Fight Club, which I think is a great, if not slightly weird. Anyway I had been going to the pictures quite a lot recently but after seeing Jurassic Park 3 and tomb radar, which are both okay, but not worth writing a review on, so I still wasn’t happy. That soon changed after I went to see Swordfish.
As you may have seen from the adverts Swordfish is an action film, but with a bit of everything. It stars a very sleek looking John Travolta, playing Gabriel the bad guy of the film. Hugh Jackman playing Stanley, once one of the best computer hackers in the world, now living in a caravan unable to see his daughter his one hope in life, and halle Berry playing Ginger who seems to work for Gabriel.
The film opens with Gabriel discussing films and how, why the bad guy is unable to win. Being told “The audiences don’t like unhappy endings”. Gabriel seems to disagree and eventually gets up and leaves being confronted by a small group of swat teems, it is here we realize what has is happening.
I think I can say, without a doubt this film has one of the best openings I have ever seen. There is an explosion (I wont tell you how it occurs) then some amazing special effects as the camera seems to follow the shock wave tossing people and cars, it was truly outstanding, especially with the cinema surround sound.
The film then moves back in time, it shows how Gabriel wishes to obtain Stanley to create something for him, Ginger helps convince Stanley to take up Gabriels offer telling him he will be paid well, money he needs to gain a good lawyer to get his daughter. This is when the film begins to really get going.
I have to say its pretty obvious this film would be more appealing to boys with the action, explosions, car chases, gun fights, computers and sexy girls it seems to have everything to keep you entertained and the fact we also get to see berry’s top half is also a great bonus.
The film can be a bit hard to follow if you don’t know a lot about computers, there were a few points were I found myself asking what the heck has he just said, but this only a small problem and its easy to guess what is going on. I found this film outstanding with some great scenes, especially when the helicopter comes down and literally picks the coach off the road, right in front of the cops.
Another fantastic thing about this film is the amount of twists it has, as the film explains later on Gabriel seems to love deception and does a very good job in deceiving not only the people in the film but the audience as well.
This is a fantastic film and a must see, especially if you’re a lad. With non-stop action, great effects and brill music, which is always great when the film gets going, what more could you want. If you’re looking for a film worth watching this has to be it.

Advantages: great acting from all involved, even Vinnie Jones!, Not the usual summer blockbuster, so offers something the others don’t., The directing and production, exemplified by the first few sequences of the film Disadvantages: Is a little inconsistent in places, Look at John Travolta’s hair cut!!
