Advantages: It's mad, I tell you, MAD! Disadvantages: Outcome doesn't make much sense
...they should be. Horrific. Enter Switchblade Romance….
Originally released in its native France as La Haute Tension, Switchblade Romance is completely mad. That's a difficult comment to justify without giving too much of the plot away, but suffice it to say that the director is obviously a nutcase. From the very beginning, the film exhibits a particularly gruesome approach to the subject matter. Our introduction to the film's killer shows he performing ... ...secret of the success behind Switchblade Romance. The premise isn't (initially) all that unusual, but the director's treatment of the subject matter is and you never really know what to expect. Who is the mysterious truck driver? What does he want? What is the relationship between Alex and Marie? These are questions that the audience will soon find itself asking, but whether the director offers you any real answers is another matter. As the film ...

Advantages: A genuinely scary, tense, gory and well-made horror Disadvantages: Has a mindblowingly dreadful twist which ruins it
...UK, for some bizarre reason, Switchblade Romance).
It tells the story of two friends, Marie (Cécile de France) and Alex (played by somebody just called Maiwenn!), who are on the way to stay with Alex's parents at their countryside farm. However, what starts off as just a regular evening soon takes a turn for the horrifying, as a strange old man (Philippe Nahon) turns up in the truck out of Jeepers Creepers (seriously, I think it is the same truck). ... ...would definitely recommend Haute Tension/ Switchblade Romance to any horror fans who like the old-fashioned slasher genre, provided they have strong stomachs! Just, maybe, leave before the end or something.
Haute Tension is available to buy from www.amazon.co.uk for £5.97. This should be in French with subtitles, although I think some editions (maybe just the American ones) are dubbed quite badly, from ...

Advantages: terrifying!!!! Disadvantages: not one of those movies you can watch over and over!
Switchblade Romance (Haute Tension)
Watching this movie feels like a throw back to the 70's and early 80's where the influx of highly bloody and violent movies coined the phrase "video nasty." You remember these films - Cannibal Holocaust, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Driller Killer, the more commonly known The Evil Dead and of course Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, as time as gone on, most of the cinema growing public have been greatly ... ...with his debut feature film Switchblade Romance. Clearly influenced by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Switchblade Romance manages to shatter the non-justified myth that French films are mind-numbingly boring and just for the fairer sex. Best friends, Marie (Cecile De France) and Alexia (Maiwenn) are travelling to Alexia's parents who, (for the sake of this movie) conveniently live out in the sticks… which of course, for a horror film opens up a whole ...

Advantages: Great if you like horror Disadvantages: Possibly very frightening if you don't
...into English as 'High Tension' Switchblade Romance delivers much more than simply high tension in this explosive and delightfully blood-soaked, riveting shocker of a film. On my first viewing of the film, I began watching the film having no prior knowledge of it, only that it was French, and was supposedly a good horror film, I was not ready. I think upon my first viewing of the film I endured it rather than appreciated it, as in the midst of the ... ...a lot of blood, in Switchblade Romance people bleed, when someone is hurt or injured they appear dishevelled and incapacitated rather than merely holding onto their shoulder and grimacing a little as they have a tendency to do in some Willis/Arnie movies. There is even a realism to the personalities of the characters, their weaknesses are visible and they are overtly human in their characteristics, they don't have all the answers and are hurt, wounded, ...

Advantages: very original Disadvantages: maybe too gory for some
I saw this film advertised in many film & music magazines over the last year and always wanted to see it. Being a fan of foreign films, especially French, I waited for the DVD but read hardly anything about it except the basic plot:
2 college friends, Marie and Alex, are on their way to Alexs parents secluded farmhouse to study. Later that night a serial killer turns up at the house and massacres Alex's family leaving the 2 girls to out-run the ... ...as it makes it sound like the run-of-the-mill slasher film with girls-in-peril on the run from the killer. But there is a hell of a lot more going on than that.
The fact that it isn't a big Hollywood thriller does it many favours in that it doesn't followed the cliche-ridden path that mainstream films do. Because of this you never know what is going to happen next or where the film will go from scene to scene.
I can't give away anymore of the plot ...
