Of the few films I've seen by French director François Ozon, it has been more miss than hit with me so far. I was intrigued by 'Under the Sand/Sous le sable' (2002), the stark yet strangely moving portrayal of a middle-aged woman who finally comes to terms with her husband's sudden and inexplicable disappearance while on holiday at the beach. It was an interesting film that played like an open-ended Hitchcockian mystery.
The only miss for me until now was the much-lauded ' 8 Women', a musical murder mystery farce that nonetheless failed to deliver on all counts, despite the game presence of some high wattage French stars like Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Emanuelle Béart.
Now comes 'Swimming Pool', a film pretending to be a mystery thriller that essentially makes much ado about…nothing. The tale centres on what happens during a holiday spent by a successful British crime fiction writer Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) at her publisher's lovely digs in the Luberon region in Provence. Morton has writer's block and needs some R&R to get her groove back. She finally does break through the block once she settles in, delighting in the peaceful retreat. This doesn't last too long, for soon she is surprised by the arrival of another occupant - and it's none other than her publisher's nubile teenage daughter, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). Julie promptly annoys Sarah with her penchant for noisy partying and her wanton sexual ways (both involving only one man at a time, usually much older than herself).
About halfway through the film, one starts to worry about Julie's dermatologic health, as we witness gazillions of UV rays in nearly every scene bearing down upon her oft-bared skin. Julie spends most of the film with hardly a stitch on. She preoccupies herself with dips in the (nicely photographed) swimming pool, sunbathing at poolside or tangling in bed (or other less cozy loci) with one of a string of mostly anonymous males, none of whom could be said to suffer from the condition of being too attractive.
Mr Ozon plays up the contrast between the two women, highlighting Julie's provocative actions against Sarah's frustrated avoidance. Julie is garrulous and sexually uninhibited where Sarah is circumspect and sexually repressed: exhibitionism and voyeurism are the order of the day. Thus we have a cardboard classic conflict that exhibits no genuine tension, never comes to a head, nor figures in what happens next. A grave and unforeseen turn in the plot causes Sarah and Julie to switch places, so to speak, with Sarah now taking charge of the situation and Julie becoming subdued. The momentum never grows to a proper pitch, and what little there is is quickly extinguished by a non-sequiturial detour that offers, for whatever it's worth, the opportunity for Mr Ozon's slim and fit older star to go nekkid in a suggested sexual encounter that seems to have come out of nowhere.
Matching the vacuous plot are embarrassingly sophomoric instances of acting by all concerned. Not one actor here will take pride in having 'Swimming Pool' included in their acting résumé. Nor should they. Ms Rampling, once an English sexpot in the Seventies (more recently, she did fine work as the wife in Mr Ozon's 'Under the Sand'), moves stiffly through the film with the corners of her mouth fixed firmly southward, overdoing the uptight English writer bit. She brings neither depth nor substance to the character. Meantime, Ms Sagnier takes her devil-may-care Julie to silly, undisciplined extremes. I had to force myself to see the film through to the end for completeness' sake; I couldn't give a freaking damn about what would happen to either of these wholly unsympathetic and irksome one-dimensional characters.
And just when you wonder how the already diverted story line will finally resolve itself, Mr Ozon decides to chuck the whole thing and leave matters to dissipate. Then, just for good irritating measure, he slips in a subtle plot twist near the end. I wasn't prepared for the twist, which isn't saying that it did the film any good. It only convinced me that everything that came before was completely dispensable, empty of meaning, and wholly unnecessary, despite the script's feeble attempts to make the distortion in the narrative seem more significant to Sarah's character than it really is. In short, the entire film was a gratuitous exercise in - I don't know - mindless and soulless soft-core porn filmmaking, I suppose. I still can't find a good reason for this film to exist.
So pretend that it doesn't and don't waste your time on this pool-sized piece of nonsensical dreck. Unless you enjoy spending a couple of hours with some tedious and unlikeable characters, I'd ask you to steer clear of this sorry excuse for a film. You'll thank me for it.
(Although one star decorates the title above, my real rating is a flat zero stars - unheard of in my ciao film rating history.)
Advantages: Interesting plot; good cast Disadvantages: A bit over-involved with itself, slow in parts
...and there's plenty of nude swimming and sunbathing. And that's not all she gets up to - she comes across as sexually precocious, to put it one way - all of which gets the possibly repressed and prudish Sarah (Rampling) very uppity. But maybe it's all just jealousy on her part.
To sum up, the arrival of Julie represents an end to the peace and quiet that Sarah was hoping to get - It's mostly about the relationship between the two women, but various ... ...tavern in the village features quite a lot, both because Sarah fancies him, and because she likes her food. There's no holding back with the profiteroles in this little vacation!
<< Is it any good? >>
It's not bad. The actors are very good, and it looks good - scenes of rural France, female sunbathing bodies… it's bound to look good, isn't it?

...so that surface of the swimming pool and film stayed untouched. That’s why no other title for this movie is more appropriate than this. I guess that "Swimming pool is kind of film that is hard to run out at the movies. But maybe some other film festivals but Cannes, can bring you the chance to see it. Advantages: Charlotte Rampling's character Disadvantages: It didn't really go anywhere
A bilingual project that doesn't quite live up to the expectation I must have put upon it. I mean, it has a strong cast (both English and French), some great locations and cinematography but just nothing that really captivates you. If it's trying to be subtle it's too subtle, if it's trying to shock or provoke then it completely fails to do so. Francois Ozon is a great director and his infatuation with English reserve and it's scope for hidden passions ... ...especially by making this French film very accessible to an English audience, but I just can't see it going beyond the arthouse crowd who I'd imagine would be suitably unimpressed. The only thing that kept me watching was Charlotte Rampling's brilliant performance as the central character, Sarah Morton. Perhaps Ozon's French fans will find some fascination through this of us English but I can't reciprocate that upon him. ...

Advantages: Fabulous overall workout Disadvantages: NOT for beginners
personally don't think there are enough stomach moves in the resistance section, although possibly the boxing moves, which involve twisting make up for this.
4. The DVD was filmed in Miami - but all you see is a swimmingpool, so it may as well have been down your local sports centre.
5. The music is quite boring - although to be fair, you probably won't notice the music to begin with!
If you're still unsure, try and get it from your local library first. I bought my copy from the Boots website for £13.99, but I've seen it on Amazon for £6.97 and eBay for £6.90. You may also be able to find it in High Street retailers for a good price if you shop around. ...

pianist who at one point reproaches her for never playing games with him.
Music by Shostakovich and Schubert features in the film, as well as a piece in the style of Bach composed especially for the film. The Shostakovich piece emphasises the harsh, cruel aspects of the plot whilst gentler pieces give relief from this. Whilst being a film that will appeal to lovers of music, as director Dercourt (himself a musician) says, the film is not about music but about revenge.
The cinematography of 'The Page Turner' is superb. We are treated to many close-ups, as well as seeing figures framed by doorways or moving along sombre corridors. I particularly loved the scenes in the indoor swimmingpool where reflected turquoise ripples of water animate the dark brown walls.
The film has a 15 certificate. It is in French with English subtitles.

Another installement to my DVD collection - the epic and classic comedy hero - Mr Bean. I love Rowan Atkinson, especially in Black Adder and also in the classic Mr Bean episodes. Despite my mood before hand, after watching Mr Bean I always feel much better, he always manages to intrigue my imagination with his biazarre mannerisms and abilty to turn the most straight forward of tasks into complete disaters!
Having not being able to buy the whollebox set I have had to purchase and review each DVD volume one by one.
This DVD contains 3 episodes, each with 3 or 4 sketches in them. DVD Description
In Francois Ozon's SWIMMING POOL, Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, a prim and proper British author who has written a successful series of mystery-crime novels. However, when she visits her London publisher (Charles Dance) in a dour mood, wearing a depressive pout, and complains that she's no longer his favourite, he invites her to use his holiday home in the south of France as a tranquil escape to try her hand at writing something a little bit different. Once there, Sarah receives an unexpected and highly unwelcome visit from his bold, sexy, confrontational teenage daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). The two are instantly at odds with each other, as Julie drinks, smokes, and slinks around the pool topless. Her loose sexual mores and mysterious late nights infuriate Sarah, whose puritanical unease is only exacerbated in Julie's presence. Wonderful scenes of Sarah writing at her computer, her lips twitching wickedly with twisted inspiration, indicate that the story is about to take a turn for the weird. And that it does, quickly, as booze-clouded activities by the swimming pool become dark and seedy. In this immaculate thriller, Rampling and Sagnier ignite the screen with static tension. Stunted conversations, resentful glances, and strange insights about the personality of each character give the story a tangible electricity. The idyllic French home and sun-drenched swimming pool put an ironic spin on the haunting story. And as Ozon works his magic with pensive camerawork, providing moments of true visual comedy that only enhance the plot's intrigue, viewers will delight in what is at once an understated yet powerful narrative feat.
