Advantages Candice Bergen

Disadvantages Lack lustre story

Sweet home Alabama is a 'chick flick' and star vehicle for Reece Witherspoon. Unfortunately the film is at it's best when Candice Bergen is on screen.
Bergen plays the mayor of New York with all the ruthless ambition you'd expect from someone in that position. Reece Witherspoon is the potential daughter-in-law she is hell on bent on breaking up with her son.
This gives lil ol Reece a flying start in winning us over and wanting a happy ending for her character, designer Melaine Carmichael.
In my view Reece Witherspoon lacks the X factor of Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan and can't carry the film. I didn't care enough about her to want her to have a happy ending despite Candice Bergen's best efforts. I was just glad when there was an ending!
The storyline is predictable with a few laughs and weepy moments. It's standard girls night in fare and will probably get better reviews when it comes out on video.
To be fair my wife and daughter enjoyed it more than me.
