INTRODUCTION
This show is an American thriller/drama series that stars Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) And Jensen Ackles ( Dean Winchester), who hunts demons and other paranormal figures. This show is much more focussed on demonic and ghostly paranormals than its predecessor, the X-files which focussed mainly on extra-terrestrials with infrequent stories of ghosts and demons.
The show opens up with a mother dying in a mysterious fire one night; her husband John is hell-bent on revenge and in doing so; becomes obsessed with the supernatural world who he perceives to be responsible for his wife's death. What happened that night has dictated the entire future of the two little boys; their lives have been already mapped out and they've got to follow it. Sam has drawn himself away into the academic world and Dean, the eldest of the two; follows in his father's footsteps as a hunter. The show starts its purpose as the father goes missing, Dean, the eldest is no stranger to his father being missing but this was different. Concerned, he drags his brother, Sam along to find the father. This starts off the show in sequence where they try to find the father. The entire season is based on finding the father.
There are 24 episodes in season 1 and there is
one main underlying theme underneath it all; the two brothers are trying to find their father who is deemed missing; each episode they try to track the father's last known whereabouts from his journal, so there's a new sub-plot that occurs and it's all tied up by the end of the episode. But I don't see how they go from town to town, following their father's journal. Do they read it up on the newspapers looking for paranormal events and then look through the journal to see if the father's been there. If so, how does that help to find the father? Whatever they were doing to find the father, it could have been more clear.
The some of the sub-plots in my opinion, is a bit tame and could have been much more dark; morbid and generally more violent than it was shown on the show. Some of the plots in my opinion was quite familiar, I did recognise some of the plots coming from the X-files, but most of the sub-plots were based on urban myths so it couldn't be totally original. I liked the fact that it referred to REAL urban myths rather than making up plots out of thin air that are totally random so I as a viewer could relate to it easily.
DIRECTION
What I like about this show is the director; he has tried really hard to make it look sexy. The imagery, the colours, the background is very appealing to the eye and makes it a lot easier to watch the show. It makes for a good atmosphere, it is very relaxed style of filming in my opinion. The interaction between the two leads; Ackles and Padelecki is very brotherly together; it is as if there is really a bond that exists and it shows really well when they have banters with each other. The script often involves very humorous conversations involving the brothers that would sound utterly silly on paper but the two pull it off successfully.
CASTING
Dean and Sam go through their own emotional journey while trying to find their father; more Sam than Dean. Sam seems to be emotional for the sake of it; rather taking it in his own stride, it did seem as if his character was being rather immature. But luckily, it doesn't derail the focus away from the plot too much. Padelecki is a very good emotional actor, he can get teary when the plot calls for it.
RECOMMENDED EPISODES IN SEASON 1.
Asylum
The episode with the mental hospital seriously scared the beejesus out of me. Fair enough, I was watching it alone in the dark but it truly was a scary episode personally. It may be due to the fact that abandoned hospitals do have scary connotations associated with it. I thought it was a very good and almost original plot that resulted in 40 minutes solid entertainment.
Provenance
This was also very good episode, I also was rather scared! Solid entertainment, it left me gripped, wanting for more. When already watching this episode, it'd gone past 2am and I just had to keep watching!
Hell House The plot isn't anything new but the script and the special effects was so good I was gripped and slightly unsettled with the certain scenes that showed people hanging on rope.
What I do like a lot is how Krikpe, the writer of the show has used the American myths and legends a lot in his episodes so far, he has made it entertaining regardless of the fact if you've heard of the myth or not.
Bad plot was Bugs- this was obviously copied off X-files, and hasn't been refined in a better way. IT could have been done much better but it failed; like a popped balloon. Still good to watch if you haven't seen the X-files episode.
CONCLUSION
Commenting on plipplop's review here who thought Supernatural wasn't scary enough; he is right, some episodes aren't scary but with the right conditions and mood, it will be truly scary! In all, series 1 of this TV show is something that no-one should ever miss! It is honestly one of the best TV season debut I've seen on TV; most tv shows take a while to find their feet to find success; this show has done it within 3 episodes. This show has two admit tingly good looking leads with really good chemistry; well-defined episodes to make sure that they don't become miss-mash of episodes, a massive knowledge of myths and curses/spells/prevention of certain entities.
I originally got this DVD off play.com, it was one box for the entire season, rather than splitting it into two volumes. I can honestly say this was worth the price I paid for! It has 895 minutes per season and with the price tag of £18, it is pretty cheap!
