Superman is probably one of the most famous comic superheroes. The character was first created by DC Comics. In 1978 when the character was made into a feature film, by Richard Donner, there was obvious wide spread interest.
Superman tells the story of the baby, Kal-El’s arrival on Earth after being sent there by his father, Jor-El (Marlon Brando), to avoid the destruction of their home planet Krypton. Kal-El’s spacecraft lands in Smallville, Kansas and is discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent who raise him as their own son and call him Clark (Christopher Reeve). Clark Kent grows up to discover that the Earth’s sun gives him great powers and with guidance from his late father Jor-El, at a Fortress of Solitude in the North Pole, he decides to use his powers for good. Clark moves to Metropolis and becomes a reporter for The Daily Planet newspaper. He falls in love with his colleague Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and meets an evil businessman called Lex Luther (Gene Hackman). He ends up becoming a hero for the people, known as Superman.
I really enjoyed this film and thought it had a perfect story to the start the Superman franchise of films. The special effects are brilliant for the time when it was made. The casting is almost perfect and features some great actors. Christopher Reeve manages to capture the awkwardness of Clark Kent and also the hero of the people as Superman. Gene Hackman has the gravitas to play the power hungry businessman, Lex Luther. Margot Kidder is good as Lois Lane and it is good to see a big name, like Marlon Brando, making a brief appearance as Superman’s father. The film kicked started the superhero movie franchise and is one film that you should definitely watch.
