Jor-El knows it and rockets his infant son to refuge on a distant world called Earth. As Jor-El'‚´s son grows to manhood he learns that he possesses super-powers he must hide from ordinary mortals around him. It takes a big movie to contain the considerable talents of Marlon Brando Gene Hackman Jackie Cooper Glen Ford Margot Kidder Valerie Perrine and at its heart the most human portrayal of the Man of Steel Christopher Reeve. Superman an Academy Award winner (1978) for special achievement in visual effects is more than big enough. Superman tells the story of the baby, Kal-El’s arrival on Earth after being sent there by his father, Jor-El (Marlon Brando), to avoid the destruction of their home planet Krypton. Kal-El’s spacecraft lands in Smallville, Kansas and is discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent who raise him as their own son and call him Clark (Christopher Reeve). Clark Kent grows up to discover that the Earth’s sun gives him great powers and with guidance from his late father Jor-El, at a Fortress of Solitude in the North Pole, he decides to use his powers for good. Clark moves to Metropolis and becomes a reporter for The Daily Planet newspaper. He falls in love with his colleague Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and meets an evil businessman called Lex Luther (Gene Hackman). He ends up becoming a hero for the people, known as Superman.
I really enjoyed this film and thought it had a perfect story to the start the Superman franchise of films. The special effects are brilliant for the time when it was made. The casting is almost perfect and features some great actors. Christopher Reeve manages to capture the awkwardness of Clark Kent and also the hero of the people as Superman. Gene Hackman has the gravitas to play the power hungry businessman, Lex Luther. Margot Kidder is good as Lois Lane and it is good to see a big name, like Marlon Brando, making a brief appearance as Superman’s father. The film kicked started the superhero movie franchise and is one film that you should definitely watch.
Advantages: The best Superman film Disadvantages: Over thirty years old
The Seventies was a dark time in cinema, the main fashion of films at the time was disaster movies such as Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure or The Towering Inferno. These were films that saw people overcome the odds or attempted to survive by defying nature. So watching the first Superman film again on DVD makes you wonder exactly how easy it was for the the filmmakers to get financing to make a film that can only be described as epic in every sense of the word.
Released back in 1978, Superman the Movie was the film that bought the American icon to the cinema screen for the first time ever. The cast were made up of names that even then were considered legendary - Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Trevor Howard, Glenn Ford to name just a few. With an unknown actor cast as the hero, the film itself plays out like mini-movies spliced ...
With 30 years since its release, Superman has obviously dated a little. But don't be fooled, that certainly doesn't remove from any of its potency or brilliance. In fact, I think it improves it. Back in the 1970's CGI and special effects, like we have now, didn't exist. Back then Christopher Reeve used wires and you believed a man could fly! Now? Well you all saw the CGI fest that was Superman Returns...
The film, scripted by Mario Puzo (author of the Godfather), takes us through the journey of the man of steel, the one known as Superman (Christopher Reeve). From his journey as an infant from his doomed planet Krypton, to the planet Earth and his alter-ego Clark Kent, writer at the Daily Planet.
Superman is eventually revealed to the world when he saves reporter Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), the woman he/Clark Kent loves. From here ...
Richard Donner's SUPERMAN is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic book adaptations ever committed to film. It follows the fate of the one they call Superman: from his birth on the doomed planet Krypton, to his subsequent (double) life as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent in downtown Metropolis.

DVD Description
Born on planet Krypton but raised in Kansas, USA, Clark Kent (as his Earth parents have named him) embarks on a voyage of self-discovery to the Arctic, where he learns the truth about his alien origins, superhuman abilities, and responsibility to preserve and protect 'truth, justice and the American Way'. As an adult, Superman (Christopher Reeve) adjusts to life in the big city, posing as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. However, he soon discovers that whether he's flirting with hard-nosed Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) or battling super-villain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), hiding his superpowers isn't easy. The film's all-star cast includes Jackie Cooper, Marlon Brando, Ned Beatty, Glenn Ford, Terence Stamp, and Valerie Perrine, among others, all camping it up wonderfully.
