...showings. In 1978 the first Superman was released and took the world by storm, we truly believed that a man could fly. Fast forward to 2006, Director Brian Singer has just released Superman Returns in cinemas. He has released a film that has quite literally split the fan base straight down the middle with regards to there opinions of the film itself. The reason? Simple, the film is a basic re-make of the original. ---The Plot---
The plot of the ... ...Superman returns back to Earth after 5 years to find that everything that he once held dear has changed. The main thing being Lois Lane who has moved on and is now settled, not married, with Richard White. He is Perry White’s nephew. Together they have a child. The story revolves around the character of Clark/ Superman adjusting to a new environment with all these changes taking place. Oh and there’s also Lex Luthor who had returned back to the Fortress ...

Advantages: Amazing effects and a simple story well-told Disadvantages: Average plot, and it's very long
...want to call him. Superman Returns is directed by Bryan Singer; most famous for the first two X-Men films, and it stars the previously unknown Brandon Routh as the man himself. It also stars Kevin Spacey (who worked with Singer on The Usual Suspects) as the arch villain Lex Luthor, a performance which I couldn't wait to watch after seeing the highly anticipated trailers. For those trivia fans out there, Superman Returns is reportedly THE most expensive ... ...for the new land. Superman won't stand for this, but for a while, he has other minor disasters to solve, most notably a shuttle launch-gone-wrong, which threatens the life of Lois and many others.
You may be thinking that the evil plot doesn't sound like much, and you're right - Lex Luthor's scheme is probably the worst and most unbelievable part of the film. Fortunately, it doesn't take up that much screen time, and it's certainly not the main ...

...a huge fan of the Superman movies when I was younger and could not wait for this film to come out on DVD so that I could show my kids just how cool Superman was. So my husband (bless him) bought me the DVD on the day it was released (I think he paid around £12.99 for it but I'm not sure). I know you can get the single disc online for around £9.99 or thereabouts so it's always worthwhile shopping around. I know its taken me ages to get round to actually ... ...follow on from the last Superman movie starring the late (and great) Christopher Reeve. Following this, astronomers on Earth have discovered fragments of the planet Krypton (Superman's home planet) drifting in space. Superman (now played by Brandon Routh) promptly departs Earth to try to find his home. And so Earth was left without its greatest protector for five years.
Within those five years, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has had a son, hooked up ...

...loath to go too near Superman for fear of destroying the legendary performance of Christopher Reeve and the directing prowess of Richard Donner.
That was until Bryan Singer was drafted in to direct the latest Superman movie, the fifth in the franchise's history: Superman Returns.
Understandably, much scepticism surrounded the film. Reeve had been brilliant at separating Clark Kent from his alter ego, Superman; in the TV spin off, Lois & Clark, ... ...Kent he's typically gawky; as Superman he is extraordinary.
Indeed, the whole film appears to have been made with the ethos of the originals firmly in mind. From the opening credits that swoop in to focus in much the same manner as the first movie's, alongside the strong orchestral sounds of John Ottman's rendition of the original Superman theme, you're treated to a glorious movie about the world's greatest ever superhero.
Modern day special effects ...

Advantages: Good cast, decent plot, excellent special effects. Plenty of character development. Disadvantages: Some Christian allegory.
In the immediate aftermath of Superman 2, astronomers have discovered the remnants of a planet they believe is (or used to be) Krypton. Superman promptly disappears to investigate himself, with no explanation and the world needs to adjust to his absence.
Five years later, a meteor hits the Kent farm once again. Martha Kent finds that her "adopted" son, Clark has returned. Clark has to re-enter the human world once more, alongside his alter ego, ... ...long though before Lois and Superman meet again, after Lex Luthor inadvertently and indirectly causes the plane that Lois is on to lose power and plummet towards the ground. This causes Lois to question her feelings towards Superman, which are not as positive as before, clearly shown in her Pulitzer prize winning piece "Why the world does not need Superman?"
Fortuitously, Superman's return also coincides with Lex Luthor's next big attempt at world ...

DVD Description
For five years, Superman (Brandon Routh) has been away from Earth, coaxed into space by a belief that Krypton may still exist. Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece 'Why the World Doesn't Need Superman'. After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there's Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control. Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester's 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer's SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying near plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to reach entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film's raison d'etre, thus keeping the Man of Steel's gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.
