In 1978 Richard Donner kick started the Superman franchise with the spell binding Superman - The Movie. At the time, it was considered a breathtaking special effects extravaganza. In the 30 years since its conception, film effects have come a very long way, so its left up to the story to stand on its own two feet. A then unknown Christopher Reeves took on the role of Superman / Clark Kent in a move to lend authenticity to the film. Surrounded by an all star cast that included newcomer Margot Kidder, the legendary Marlon Brando and the brilliant Gene Hackman, it would be all too easy to slide into the shadows. But Reeves was absolutely perfect for the role. Krypton has been blown up and Jor-el has sent his only son to Earth with all of his knowledge packed into a small crystal. Living on a farm with the Kents and raised as their own son, Clark Kent starts to realise that he is different from other humans. When the time comes to leave the small farm that he has been raised on, Clark gets a job in Metropolis on the Daily Planet alongside ambitious reporter Lois Lane. Whilst he bumbles through the day missing the best stories, his alter-ego Superman is out battling petty crime through the city. But when criminal mastermind Lex Luthor sets up missiles that causes a massive earthquake and threatens the life of all that Clark holds dear, he has to don his cape in the ultimate battle between evil and good. Superman was an all out American Dream extravaganza back when it was released. Colourful, cartoonlike and bold, it was 2 hours of utter fun. Now it stands up as a superhero classic, and whereas the effects look a little dated, it is still the perfect film to while away a saturday afternoon.
Superman 2 is notorious for the sacking of Richard Donner. Very recently Richard god his own crack at the film to put right what was considered to be wrong with Superman 2, using all of the footage he filmed, and some screentest material. However the original Superman 2 isn't a terrible film as it goes. The three aliens who were imprisoned by Jor-el and the council at the start of Superman - The Movie have escaped the Phantom Zone and landed on earth. Determined to rule earth, they dont bargain on meeting with Superman; or to them Jor-el's only son and last surviving lifeform of Krypton. Meanwhile Superman has fallen in love with Lois Lane, but finds out that he must give up his superpowers to be with her and live as a mortal being. But he must find a way back in order to fend off the evil wiles of Lex Luthor and rid Earth of the three superbeings that threaten to take over the world and rule all of mankind. Superman 2 has all the right ingredients for a successful sequel, and although its not as good as the original, its certainly a decent story with decent performances from the cast. Richard Donner's footage is used occasionally but much of the story was changed from the original script.
The Superman franchise started to go a bit awry with Number 3. Notable for the absence of Gene Hackman as Lex Luther, its Robert Vaughan who steps into the fold as baddie Ross Webster, who is determined to rid the world of Superman. Aided by a greedy computer technician, Ross and his demented sister Vera create the ultimate villian - a psychotic computer that seems to take on a mind of its own. Meanwhile Superman faces his own demons, literally, as he has to have a battle between the good and evil in himself, and leading up to a hilarious sequence involving the Leaning Tower of Pizza. Superman 3 is nowhere near good enough comparative to the original 2 films, but its fairly watchable, and lends a slapstick element to proceedings. Christopher Reeves and Margot Kidder are great together, and Annette O'Toole is typically good as a love interest from Clark's hometown. But this film really should have been the last of the series.
Superman 4 is another kettle of fish. A complete turkey of a film, its absurd to think that this film moved so far from the incredible film that was the first and second Superman films. Superman has vowed to rid the world of nuclear weapons. However, Lex Luther has created his own nuclear weapon - a man who can combat the powers of Superman. What follows is a mishmash of disjointed melodrama, bad effects where you can actually see the wires that the men fly on, and disgraceful performances from the usually good Gene Hackman. In fact the only person who seems to have any fun are Christopher Reeves, and Margot Kidder who returns as Lois Lane after a minimal appearance in Superman 3 due to speaking out against the sacking of Richard Donner. It was certainly time to put the Superman franchise to bed, here. The franchise has seen a revival 20 years later with the release of the rather decent Superman Returns. However it comes complete with the absence of Christopher Reeves, who sadly died in the interim years as a result of a bad horse riding accident. Superman remains his legacy, and thankfully it at least had 2 decent films.
There are incredible extra's on the first film disc. There are cut out scenes now placed back in the film which are really very good and its hard to see why they were cut out in the first place. There are also documentaries which chart the update of the career's of the cast, the creation of the first Superman film, the screentests. There really is a wealth of material there for the first film. However the subsequent three films come complete with only the trailers which seems a bit light comparitively. All in all, there is 8 good hours of watchable film and documentary. So the boxset is certainly worth the money.
Advantages: Gene Hackman, brilliant Disadvantages: Really shows its age
The start of this and Superman 2 don't tally, Jor-el has nothing to do with Zod's sentence. He is obviously their advocate in court, the Elders pass judgment. Jor-el says nothing, neither condemning Zod or supporting him. There are at least 6 Elders who all say guilty. Even if Jor-el voted, Zod, Ursa & Non would be guilty by majority. Anyway the 3 criminals should be grateful to Kal-el, he saved them from the destruction of Krypton. Launching Kal-el ... ...foot above the ground. Superman has no jurisdiction to arrest the burglar apart from a citizens arrest, the policeman has no proof the burglar stole the jewels Superman shows him. The boat would just fall over in the street, it wouldn't stand freely like that. Those idiots flying Airforce One make several mistakes. They wouldn't crash with the loss of one engine and tiny bit of wing. They wouldn't have to notify civilian ground control ANYTHING! ...

Superman struggles with his battle over Lex who claims to be the smartest criminal on the planet. There are quite a good range of emotions here s things go wrong and the little love story that is developing is nice. These films are true family gems where we can all sit and enjoy and have a bit of fun.
Superman II continues where 1 left off but this time the special effects are better and the general feel of the movie is ...

Superman started life as a cartoon hero in the 1930's. The story goes that he was born on the planet Krypton before being blasted to earth when his planet was destroyed. He then ends up in Kansas as Clark Kent and discovers early on that he has superhuman powers. The movies basically show his fight for good against evil and are done so extremely well. Christopher Reeve plays Superman in all of these movies, the first being an ...

, Christopher Reeve, being in a terrible horse riding accident which paralysed him and eventually led to his death, the Superman movie franchise almost completely died with him.

The Superman box set. In Richard Donner's blockbuster, the Superman myth is well told, from his birth on the doomed planet Krypton to his childhood in a small Kansas town and beyond. After he comes of age, young Clark Kent, as his Earth parents have named him, learns the truth of his alien birth on a voyage of discovery to the Arctic. It is there that he learns through a link to his long-dead birth parents of his superhuman abilities and his responsibility to preserve and protect truth, justice and the American Way. Once he adjusts to life in the big city, Metropolis, he discovers that hiding his superpowers as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent isn't easy as he flirts with hard-nosed Lois Lane and battles supervillain Lex Luthor. Also includes Superman II, III and IV - The Quest For Peace.
