The story of two friends… Superbad is based on two friends trying to work their way up the hierarchy of popularity in their high school but soon face separation when they get accepted into different colleges. The main reason for this is that one is a bit of a genius and the other needs a little help with his basic life and social skills, to say the least. They only have a few weeks left before they must leave each other and so time is running out, especially if they don't want to go to college as virgins! God forbid the thought!
They are asked to collect the alcohol for a party, in doing so they must get fake identification. They cannot let the girls down as they know the only way they will be popular is if they get the booze for everyone. The girls they like are at the party also so they know this is their big and only chance.
Jonah Hill, who has previously been in Evan Almighty and The 40 Year Old Virgin, plays Seth, the chubby geek obsessed with pornography that is desperate to get into a local hotties warm bed for spoonies and some action. However he is less that subtle about it and peruses the wrong ladies in completely the wrong way. Let's just say that he gets groovy with
a young lady in a short skirt at a party and then realises he has a rather dark stain on his trousers (I shall let you ponder what you think that stain may have been). This was not the classiest part of the film but gives those of you who are curious about this film an indication of what you might see if you choose to watch it. Jonah plays his character with sheer perfection. He must have cringed when reading the script as he has some very embarrassing moments indeed, some hilarious, some I had to walk out the room and make a cup of tea! Seth likes a girl who seems like a party animal and she is the person who asked him to collect the alcohol for the party. He must achieve his task!
Michael Cera, who has not been in any other exciting comedy films, plays Evan, the level headed intelligent geek with a cute persona who actually wants to get in girls pants because he is in love and not because he doesn't want to go to college as a virgin. What a sweetheart. He was my favourite character purely because he is in love with a girl and when she gets quite intoxicated at a party she offers herself on a plate for him but he politely declines, quite rightly so, especially as she vomited on the bed soon after. Evan cares very much about Seth but decided to keep it a secret that he would be room mates with Fogell (a bittersweet skinny chap) when he goes to college. Seth finds out and is very upset that Evan felt he had to lie about it. Soon they have more important things to worry about than arguing.
Both characters mentioned above have that best friend chemistry required as well as being spot on with their jokes. In my eyes, the real star of the movie, however, was newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who took the role of Fogell with immense talent. What a guy, he also wants to bed a lady but his character gets more than he bargained for when he is asked to get the alcohol for a party. Once inside there is a robbery and the witty but unintelligent policemen turn up and start questioning Fogell about his age. He gets away with his fake ID (or so he thinks) and goes on a booze filled session with the police. They turn up to bars and collect some beers, sit in their car and drink it, have deep memorable chats and the police let Fogell shoot their gun for fun. Very strange but an interesting storyline for Fogell. The thing is, all along the police knew Fogell's ID was fake but wanted a night of youth ness and drinking so they let him off to peruse their teenage years again. Christopher plays the role with perfection and great talent, why hasn't he been snapped up yet for big blockbuster comedies? Ben Stiller, this boy needs to be in your next film!
The end is very sweet but I wo'nt spoil it completely. They managed to get some alcohol to the party and also grab a chat with their future love interests. Evan had to turn down his girl as she was too intoxicated( as mentioned above) and the Seth tried to hard to win his over with charm and alcohol but she doesn't drink at all! Amusing especially after their entire evening was about pleasing the girls. Was it a total waste of time? You sall have to watch it and see.
Seth Brogen and Evan Goldberg who collectively have credits for 'Knocked up', 'The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Kung Fu Panda', ' American Dad', 'Shrek the Third', 'Da Ali G Show' and many more presented a good script but a little long winded and can drag at times. I wander if the main characters were based on their lives as youngsters (especially as their names are Evan and Seth, I was very slow at figuring this out). They obviously have a very good partnership and work well as writing together; I look forward to another film with a little more fine tuning.
Greg Motolla directed the film and as I have not seen another films directed by him I do not have the right to comment or compare, however I feel he did a very good job as the acting was brilliant so he should take big credit for that.
There is no reason why anyone, young or old, can't relate to this off-the-wall comedy. I would recommend this film to watch, however once is enough I think, it's a typical American teen cheesy film but the humour in it makes it a worthwhile watch.

I am not a comedy fan as a rule, especially when it comes to American comedy, but I quite enjoyed this, silly though it was... very nicely summed up, thnaks! D x
