Superbad is a teen comedy set in high school and following the exploits of two best friends and their geeky classmate. Seth and Evan, are two high school seniors, desperate to lose their virginity before they go off to college. The problem is, they are not as popular as they like to think, and so they pin all of their hopes on sleeping with the girls of their dreams when they finally get invited to a party. The movie takes place over the course of one day, as the boys, along with their classmate Fogell drum up a plan to get a fake ID, so that they can buy alcohol for everyone at the party and be seen as cool. The comedy starts when Fogell, after acquiring his new fake ID, chooses to change his name to Mclovin, and his age from 17 to 25, although he doesn't really look a day over 15. They decide to give it a go anyway, and head to the liquor store to buy the booze for everyone on their list. While he is in the store, he is attacked by an armed robber and the police are called. The police offer to take Fogell/Mclovin to his party, but end up getting called to assist in all sorts of crimes along the way. Once Fogell is driven off, Seth gets hit by a car, and as
compensation, the man who hits him agrees to take them to a different party and get them some alcohol. They end up leaving the party with some stolen beer, but not before started a fight after Seth is caught out in a hysterical way, dancing with the host's fiancé. They run off, unhurt, with two detergent bottles filled with beer. The best friends argue, which results in Seth being run over again, but this time by the police car carrying Fogell. They make run for it, away from the police, and finally reach the party of Jules, the girl for whom they where buying beer, and the object of Seth's fantasies. While at the party, Becca, the girl with whom Even wants to make out, drunkenly comes on to him, and they end up alone in one of the bedrooms, but Evan, not wanting to take advantage, decides not to have sex with her, and after she is sick on him, he gets dressed and leaves. A drunken Seth, tells Jules that he wants her to be his girlfriend, but then the drink gets the better of him and he passes out, head butting her in the process and giving her a black eye. Whilst this is happening, Fogell manages to seduce a girl he has a crush on, but while they are having sex, the two cops crash the party and she runs out. They admit to him that they knew he was lying all along, but wanted to show him that cops can be cool too. Seth is disappointed because he thinks Jules doesn't like him, but has to rescue a passed out Seth and carries him from the party to avoid the cops. They make up after their argument and end up spending the night at Evans house. The next day they bump into Becca and Jules at the mall, and go off with the girls in pairs, and the film ends with each guy seemingly getting the girl.
The main character in the film are Seth, Evan and Fogell/Mclovin. There are several supporting characters too such as the police officers, Jules, and Becca. The performances from everyone are absolutely fantastic, but special recognition should go to Chris Mintz-Plasse who plays Fogell, who, in his first ever acting role really steals a lot of the scenes in the show. The main cast are not particularly well known, which I thinks adds to the effect of the film, as it makes it that much more believable. The main cast are as follows:
Seth - Jonah Hill Evan - Michael Cera Fogell/Mclovin - Chris Mintz-Plasse Officer Michaels - Seth Rogen Officer Slater - Bill Hader Jules - Emma Stone Becca - Martha MacIsaac
The film itself has become the highest grossing high school comedy film of all time. It can be compared to lots of films such as American Pie or Porky's, but I personally think this surpasses them all. It is fresh and funny and told from a toally different viewpoint. The three main actors, are perfect within their roles and make the film funnier with their mannerisms as well as their dialogue. It is superbly written, and is said to be a semibiographical story of the writers teenage years. One of the writers, Seth Rogen, also stars as Officer Michaels in the film.
There aren't many DVD extras, but there are some, including gag reels and trailers. I personally think the film holds its own anyway and so the lack of extras was fine by me. In all, I think this is possibly one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Its whacky slapstick humour is easy to understand and you cant help laughing along to the jokes. There is some sexual references and strong language, but if that doesn't bother you, then this film is definitely one should buy. It may seem to be intended for a teen audience, but don't let that deter you. The jokes in this film, and the story itself can be enjoyed by everyone, young or old, and it doesnt discriminate by making the story seem childish. It is easy to watch this and remember all of those awkward high school days empathise with the main cast. This film is genuinly fantastic. Don't bother renting it, just buy it and watch it over and over again.
