I was always a fan of the American Pie films and although I know they are mainly targeted towards a teen audience but being young I do love a funny film and Superbad provides the laughs. As state before, you won't like this if you're past your teen years or hate immature high school films but if you're younger and liked the American Pie films this will be right up your street. The films I had heard about through my friend, I had seen the posters on buses but wasn't really sure what it was about. My friend recommended it to me and so I went to the Apple site to watch the trailer and it looked quite funny, not amazing but like it could be ok so I decided to take the risk and go to the cinema.
The film begins with us meeting the characters Evan (Michael Cera) and Seth (Jonah Hill) who are leaving high school and have only a few weeks left. The two are going to part ways though because Evan has gotten into Dartmouth and Seth didn't get in. A girl called Jules
who Seth likes has invited them to her party but then their friend Fogell (Christopher Mintz Plasse) arrives telling them he is getting a fake ID so as long as he gets them alcohol they'll let him go too. While in the process of buying the alcohol a shop robbery takes place and Fogell is knocked out by the robber as he leaves. Seth and Evan wait outside but when they see police cars begin to worry about what has happened to their friend.
As the film goes on Seth gets hit by a car in the car park and as the man gets out they begin to argue. They then find out the man is going to a party and will get them in, this seems like a great idea for them because they think they can then steal alcohol from the party. Becca a girl Evan likes keeps phoning him to ask him where he is because she wants him to get to the party as Seth and Evan never usually turn up to parties. The film is pretty much one with a basic plot which doesn't really need a lot of explaining but don't let that put you off as that doesn't mean it is boring which it isn't.
The film is pretty much focused around these guys being geeks their whole way through high school and for the last few weeks they want to have a good time. They also want to lose their virginity before going off to college and this also plays a major part in the plot. I really liked the relationship between the guys in the film as you can tell they are all good friends off screen as well as on screen, which I have heard them also confirm in interviews. They are all roughly about 18, 19 and I haven't seen them in anything before really well apart from Jonah maybe.
I'd say there were some original jokes in the film though which I always like and the character of Fogell is the best. He just walks into the classroom on his first scene talking ghetto and he is this little geeky boy but he makes everyone laugh instantly. He is your typical geek but a likeable one where as I'd say Evan was the good natured of the lot of them he cares more and is the least outgoing. Seth is the outspoken one who thinks he is in charge and tries to be trendy when he really isn't.
As for the acting in the film having not seen them in anything I can't comment too much about their transitions but I can comment from having seen them on interviews. I'd say Christopher Mintz Plasse was still a bit of a geek off screen but tries a bit less to be cool and is also still quite a funny guy but a bit more down to earth. Michael Cera seems still like his character quite sensible, well spoken but I'd say he's maybe a bit shyer off screen and Jonah I haven't seen to The plot was not too original a lot of people sum this film up as a film about three guys finishing high school wanting to lose their virginity but I wouldn't really say that was all it was about. I'd say it was about these three young boys feeling the pressures of teenage society and trying to find themselves and feeling they have to follow the teenage stereotypes. It's also about friendship and how these guys are dealing with the transformation of teenager to adult and it is well portrayed.
The film is a funny one and even if you don't like the sound of the plot you will laugh at some of the parts. The film is still showing in cinemas and lasts approximately 113 minutes. It is a UK 15. The official website is http://www.areyousuperbad.co.uk/ for more of an idea on the film.
