I decided to buy this DVD after seeing a trailer for the movie on another DVD I got recently, the storyline sounded different and it intrigued me, so when I got an HMV e-voucher, I rushed to purchase this.
The film stars Will Ferrell, known usually for his roles in comedy movies such as The Anchorman and Taladega Nights. This movie is definately not as funny (certainly not in the usual openly slapstick way) as his other movies and I wouldn't purchase it if your wanting a laugh out loud movie, even though there's a slightly mis-leading quote from the Daily Mirrror on the front of the DVD box saying that its 'one of the comedies of the year' (presumably missing the word 'best' but whatever), I wouldn't treat it as a comedy, its more of a sort of philosophical movie, I would say.
Anyway, to explain, the storyline of the movie is that tax man Harold Crick (played by Will Ferrell), leads a pretty boring life, doing the same things every day, his life run like clockwork, until one day he notices (or more, hears) something strange, the voice of a narrator talking about him, describing what he's doing. This obviously confuses him and as it continues, he asks people if they can hear the voice but they can't and he gets accused of having schizophrenia (although it isn't schizophrenia and this is only mentioned once in the film, its not really about mental health issues). However when he really gets worried is when he's waiting for his usual bus ride home and the narrator voice mentions something along the lines of 'little did
Harold know that on a seemingly regular day like this, he was about to face his death' and on hearing that, he runs away scared and taking the forced advice of a therapist, goes to a local University to ask for help from Jules Hilbert (played by Dustin Hoffman), an English Literature Professor. Now at first he's very sceptical but on mentioning a particular phrase that the narrator voice used ('Little did he know'), he reckons that he can help Harold (apparently professor Hilbert has written whole papers solely on 'little did he know'(!), that what makes him believe that it is indeed an author talking Harolds story, if you know what I mean) and so from there, the film follows Harold trying to avoid the worst happening to him, with professor Hilbert working to identify the author and help him try to discover the ending of the story and by doing so, he leaves his rather dull ran like clockwork work and home life behind and starts to do things that he'd always wanted to, like play the guitar and even get close to a client that he had to audit as part of his job, which is something you feel he would never have done otherwise.
It probably sounds pretty strange and indeed it is a fairly strange film, not an average run of the mill romantic movie or comedy and its not entirely dramatic I'd say, its one of those quirky movies that has a story you probably haven't really seen before. I thought it worked well on screen and it makes you think, in a philosophical way. The reaction when his narrator/author finds out that her character is in fact a real human being, well its as you might expect, it comes as quite a shock! but the bottom line is that, as professor Hilbert warns Harold, the narrator and author Karen Eiffel (played by Emma Thomson) has never ended a single story without her main character being killed off, so can Harold survive the story? thats the full storyline and no I'm not going to tell you if he does or not, you'll have to watch the movie to find out! saying any more may give the story away...
The main question that this movie will make you wonder is whether your really in control your life and it of course makes you think that you never know when your last day may be, like is said in the film, everyone dies sometime, you can't avoid death and so should get the most out of life while you can, that sort of thing, although it isn't too 'preach-y' really, the issues are brought across in a good way I thought. I also though that the characterisation with Harold particularly, was very good. You really do feel quite attached to and sorry for him as the movie goes on and your really left hoping for the best for him and cheering him on, or at least I did anyway.
This isn't a movie to sit down and watch as a purely entertainment laugh a minute sort of comedy movie, like I'd already said but it still works very well I thought. I'm not really sure that its the kind of movie you'd want to watch very often but its definately worth renting at least, I've always been interested in movies with original stories and this is one of the better ones! (infact the story is his story, if you know what I mean).
In the end, he may be brought across at the start of the movie as a rather boring middle-aged tax man, who doesn't do much and lives a very bland day to day existence, but you really do end up feeling for him and cheering him on and the movie itself I certainly wouldn't describe as bland.
The acting is done very well in this movie, any movie where you feel yourself really becoming attached to a character (especially one that is originally portrayed as being so bland and boring) and rooting for a good ending for them, is a movie where the character portrayal works effectively and this is definately the case. I have to say, I haven't watched Ferrells other comedy movies so I guess I didn't have any presumptions of what he'd be like (though I do know of the other comedy movies he's appeared in) but I did think he was a good choice to play tax man Harold.
This is a great movie to watch if you want to see something different. The movies benefits greatly by its cast of well established actors and actreses including of course Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah, another comedy actress who plays the author Karen's assistant, just don't let the comedy actor and actress' names confuse you into thinking that this is a film with major laughs around every corner, though there are some moments that will make you chuckle, there is some humour there definately but its more of a semi serious, uplifting drama with a sprinkling of comedic moments, I would say. Well worth renting or at least watching once.
(Also it may be worth mentioning for anyone who thinks they'd like to own this on DVD rather than renting it (I haven't watched the bonus features but I know it has a number of featurettes as well as a couple of deleted and extended scenes and trailers), I got this in early August on HMV.co.uk and it was only £6.99 which I thought was a particularly good price, considering it only came out on DVD back in April I believe or certainly only this year...)

Advantages: Easy to understand - documents ALL her life and her impact upon England as a ruler. Disadvantages: Some people might prefer a 'traditional' film adaptation.
Advantages: Witty, gritty, thrilling... the best gangster film I've seen in years. Disadvantages: A bit of a Deus ex machina ending, some predictable moments...negligable really
