The only problem is they are dressed as giant woodpeckers doing a song and dance in the bank for the customers. The result of the robbery sees Harry and Skip being arrested and sentenced to 125 years in prison.
Harry and Skip finally arrive in prison and Skip ends up riding the bucking bull in the governors office and as it turns out he is excellent at it so is asked to ride in the rodeo and represent the prison. He is told by his friends not to accept and to make them wait and then he will be able to give demands to them for him to ride. Harry is asked by his friends to let them be his team so they can arrange a break out at the rodeo. Will Skip be able to put up with the punishments and jobs he is being given in order to get him to agree or will he manage to get his demands met. Ultimately will the men be successful in their plan to break out?
I love watching this film as Pryor and Wilder never fail to make me laugh. The pair work extremely well together and have a great on screen chemistry which helps with the timing of their jokes and funny sketches. The supporting actors in the film were also excellent and also worked well with the pair. One of my favourites had to be Groseburger, the extremely fat mass murder who everyone is scared of as only Pryor and Wilder could befriend him and at one point have his singing like a choir boy! There were a few characters in the film which I did not warm to, the one prison warden and the governor but we weren’t really supposed to like these men.
The storyline was good but not at all believable but I can forgive this as it is not a serious film as is meant to be a light hearted comedy which it definitely was. The film was made back in 1980 so is very dated now which does show with the clothes people are wearing and cars which are being driven. I don’t think this makes the film any less watch able though as I still thoroughly enjoy it.
The music was good although not too memorable, I remember thinking that it was all suitable for the parts which it was used in and it did a good job of setting the feel and tension for the film.
This is a very funny film but hubby did drive me mad by laughing and telling me to watch this but as it is going to be funny, I did end up throwing a cushion at him and he did finally stop doing it. We both ended laughing out loud at several things in this film. I especially enjoyed the pair when they first got to the prison and they both freaked also when they went into the big waiting cell which was full of prisoners waiting to go to the prison and Pryor’s character told Wilder to act hard or he would end up dead. They managed to put so much more into this film and their face added a lot of the humour with the silly expressions they did and also Gene Wilder’s eyes!
The DVD which we have does have one bonus feature which is Filmographics but I have not taken the time to watch or view this as I have no interest in it.
The running time of this film is 106 minutes which I felt was just the right length as any longer and they would have made the story drag out and made it a little boring. The certificate on the film is a 15 as there are some drug references and strong language in the film but I feel that perhaps more mature 13 or 14 year olds would really enjoy this film.
I am definitely going to recommend this film as personally I feel it is the pair best together and you cannot fail to laugh at the crazy things to pair get up to when they find themselves locked up with a wide variety of different characters!
Gene Wilder and Richard Prior star in this superb comedy directed by George Roy Hill. Wilder and Prior are two small town losers who decide to travel to the big city to make something of themselves. Well, they certainly do that, landing a job which requires them to wear woodpecker costumes...well its a start I suppose. Unfortunately for them, they choose the day that a pair of bank robber decide to use the same disguise to rob the city bank and naturally ... ...being sentenced to 120 years in prison for the crime. Things look pretty grim as they find themselves sharing a cell with the most enormous inmate who completely fills the cell, squashing them againt the bars by his sheer girth. The prison warder has it in for them, the place is full of nuts and a couple of wise asses like these two can only go one way...However, salvation seems at hand when Wilder shows superb rodeo skills, which is just what the ...

This movie is one of the better comedies I have seen over the last few years. The comedy duo of Wilder and Pryor are one of the best we have seen in movies. They have such great comic chemistry. This is the best prison comedy ever in my opinion if that is saying much. I highly recommend renting this movie or at least catching it on the tube.

These two make a great pair and even though its an old’ish film, I would still keep it on my shelf.
We start in New York ... ...where the diners seem to be a little too happy. been arrested as they are unable to both look at the camera at the same time as Wally keeps turning to look at Dave so he can see what he is saying. I think this is a very clever part which never fails to amuse me. My hubby also finds this film very funny and he is actually the one who introduced me to this pair of actors.
I will admit that this is probably not the best film I have seen this pair in but it is still a great fun film which is so easy to watch and enjoy. Personally I did enjoy their performance more in StirCrazy.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Behind the Scenes Featurettes
Filmographics
Theatrical Trailer
As anyone who reads my reviews will know I am not a fan of bonus material so I have not watched these.

Advantages: Pryor on top of his game Disadvantages: over use of certain choice words
amount of general swearing in the performance.
I am reluctant to give any examples of actual gags in fear of spoiling the DVD for any newcommers only to comment that Pryor describes his fathers death whilst having sex as "he came and went at the same time!" That is probably the best example of the type of humour Pryor uses within the gig.
This actual DVD features the added bonus of 'StirCrazy' a film that added to Pryor's reputation as an actor, something that surely contributed to being paid more than Christopher Reeve as Superman in Superman III. The chemistry between Pryor and Gene Wilder is terrific to watch despite pryors use of cocaine was into orbit during the making of this amusing comedy flick.

New Yorkers, Skip Donahue and Harry Monroe, have no jobs and no prospects. They decide to flee the city and find work elsewhere, and land jobs as woodpeckers to promote the opening of a bank. When their feathery costumes are stolen and used in a bank robbery, they no longer have to worry about employment -- they're sent to prison! Soon our heroes, imprisoned with a wild assortment of inmates, are trying to make the best of a bad situation. With 120-year sentences, it certainly doesn't look as though they're getting out anytime soon. STIR CRAZY represents some of Poitier's best directorial work, and has become an American classic. His pairing of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor makes for an unforgettable duo whose humor is unrestrained and natural. The use of memorable character names like "Slowpoke" and "Caesar Gironimo" are signature touches of Poitier's.
