resist?Stingray(1964) was the show Gerry Anderson made just before he really hit the big time withThunderbirds(1965). He produced 39 episodes of the 21st century adventures of Troy Tempest, tall, dark and handsome (his voice based on James Garner's) captain of the titular submarine. Troy's mission: to protect the seas on behalf of WASP (World Aquanaut Security Patrol). With complex underwater model and puppet effects, this was groundbreaking television, especially as it was the first UK series to be made in colour, even though for years it was only seen in black and white. Special effects director Derek Meddings later graduated to the James Bond movies, while Moneypenny herself (actress Lois Maxwell) voiced Atlanta Shore. Here, just as in the Bond movies, she played second fiddle in our hero's affections, the mute Marina becoming Stingray's sex-goddess. The end credits even featured a song in her honour, "Aqua Maria", which became an international hit. As for the bad guys, half-man, half-fish Titan and his Terror Fish wage a dastardly war against humanity and the peaceful underwater citizens of Pacifica. Four decades on, the models and underwater sequences still impress andStingrayremains eccentric cult family entertainment.In the first episode, "Stingray", a Titan Terror Fish sinks a WASP submarine and Troy and sidekick, Phones, fall into the hands of the evil Titan. This action-packed beginning introduces all the major characters and gadgets, setting the scene for the adventures to come. "Plant of Doom" sees Titan outraged that Troy has rescued his beautiful slave Marina. After consulting an undersea god he hatches a revenge plot using a deadly air-consuming flower. In "Sea of Oil" Atlanta is kidnapped by an underwater race who plant a bomb on Stingray, while in "Hostages of the Deep" Marina is threatened with death by swordfish blade. --Gary S Dalkin

I was there, a party of about 50 guests and 5 or 6 staff ? tie up alongside a floating platform next to the netted area and there are steps down into the area the stingrays are in. The water is three to six feet deep, incredibly clear and the green colour of shallow Caribbean water when it is over white sand. This one loses Kenneth More from the cast but holds onto the other big name, Dirk Bogarde, the heartthrob of the era, reprising his role as Simon Sparrow, and finds a new role for the blustering James Robertson Justice. He has changed from being Lancelot Spratt in In The House to Captain Hogg, the ships commander in this one with very little difference to be seen between the two.
Doctor At Sea has a number of similar themes to its precursor, medical hilarities, women problems and love still haunt Sparrow's life to a large extent and all of these turn up again. The idea of setting the movie at sea must have seemed like a good one. It gives the writers a radical departure, location and set wise, from the school/hospital tied original and allows them to explore a doctors life from a different direction. Never fear; I?m not about to start waxing lyrical about the sea. I?m more in the Irving Berlin camp than in the Masefield. I quote the lines above to illustrate the fact that even the most feverish of fanatics for the sea has to admit that maritime views are limited, consisting as they do of just two lonely elements: water and sky. And it?s stretching a point to include the sky, which can equally be seen above land as above sea. So, essentially, we?re talking about water.
