Advantages: Some fine comedy moments, Klines acting Disadvantages: Some irritating characterisation
A Fish Called Wanda sets out with the objective of being a romantic comedy playing on familiar themes of American/British differences and the gangsters girlfriend being tempted away to a better crime free life. It succeeds in much of its aims in as much as it has amusing moments and there are some distinguishable elements of romance. Alas as a whole though it is disappointing as it fails often to achieve true originality or brilliance. Perhaps with John Cleese we just expect more.
The film was co-written by Cleese and director Charles Crichton. It is therefore creditable that the best comic role went to and the performance came from Kevin Kline as the cruel and paranoid gangster who switches in roles from Jamie Lee Curtis lover or brother. Kline won an Oscar for his protrayal and Cleese was also nominated. You can only guess it was ...
Advantages: Hilarious, great cast, original, fantastic script Disadvantages: The sequel
I have avoided reviewing the product of the week for two reasons: Firstly, I never felt I really had any invested interest in the products that were available each week and secondly, I found it a bit tedious (Like many I imagine) to continue to read review about the same thing over and over again while still remaining unbiased and I felt I couldn?t expect anyone else to do so with any more gusto then I could muster up.
Imagine my surprise then, when I discover, this week?s product is the ultimate comedy classic A Fish Called Wanda ? a film that I have seen many, many times and can never run out of things to say about it.
So for all you poor Wanda virgins, enjoy just a tiny glimpse into the film classic that is ?A Fish Called Wanda?.
Director: Charles Crichton
Writers: John Cleese and Charles Crichton
Actors: John Cleese, Kevin ...
Advantages: De Vito, Bonham Carter and Lange. Some great sets and effects Disadvantages: Self indulgent, self aggradising, sentimental, saccharine soaked story - which misses the real point..
my eventual enjoyment of the film I firmly resisted the pull of the ?big screen experience? and waited patiently for it?s release on DVD, satisfied that I had not succumb to the mass advertising and hype which surrounded it?s release.
So, was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no.
It is a ?big adventure? which has Tim Burton?s fertile, often visionary imagination stamped all over it. It brims with amazing sets, costumes and colours, and undoubtedly does good service to Daniel Wallace?s novel as a number of decent actors inject enough life into their characters to make them convincing and on the whole likeable. There?s nothing modest about the film?s ambition but there?s no denying the masterful touches with which Burton brings to life the fantasy alter-world in which the majority of the story is set. So it?s not a bad start ...
