Lat night I was in need of watching something light and funny. Searching the shelves of my local video shop I spotted Step brothers starring Will Ferrell and decided to give it a try.
Cast. ***** Will Ferrell-Brennan Huff. John Reilly-Dale Doback. Mary Steenburgen-Nancy Huff. Richard Jenkins- Dr Robert Doback. Adam Scott- Derek Huff. Kathryn Hahn- Alice Huff.
The film runs for 98 minutes and is a certificate 15. The film is directed by Adam Mc Kay
The plot. ********** Nancy Hoff and Dr Dale Doback meet and fall in love. They soon decide to get hitched and move in together. Both parents have 40 year old unemployed sons still living at home. Neither has ever had to take any responsibility and act more like 10 year olds than men. The sons have very similar characters and resent each other at the start. They both work at trying to get at the other with hilarious results.
The parents decide to retire and sail Dr Dobacks boat around the world. However in order to fund the trip the family home needs to be sold. This means the sons will have to get jobs and fend for themselves. As time goes on the step brothers become close as they realize how much they have in common. They both sleep walk at night, both share childish games and neither has ever grown up.
Into the mix comes Derek and his wife, the obnoxious younger brother of Brennan. Derek works as an estate agent and is given the task of selling the family home. There are several hilarious scenes when the brothers try to sabotage any sale! His wife Alice decides she is in love with Dale and there are several very funny sexual encounters.
The plot is a very simple one and won’t tax anyone. I don’t want to spoil the film by giving too much away but suffice it to say it all ends well.
My thoughts. ************* This is an absolutely hilarious film! It won’t win any Oscars but if you are looking for something light and funny this will tick all the boxes. It has a 15 certificate due to the very strong language and sexual content. I wouldn’t want to let young children watch this!
The acting is spot on with Will Ferrell and John Reilly complementing each other brilliantly. The comedy is silly and often splat stick but it works well. I laughed all the way through so much my sides ached!
