director Adam McKay brings Will Ferrell and John C Reilly back together again in Step Brothers! In Step Brothers Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a sporadically employed thirty-nine-year-old who lives with his mother, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen). Reilly plays Dale Doback, a terminally unemployed forty-year-old who lives with his father, Robert (Richard Jenkins). When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step brothers. As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle-aged, immature, overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their parents back together. To pull it off, they must form an unlikely bond that maybe, just maybe, will finally get them out of the house.

Last night I sat down to watch Step Brothers after being told by a friend, who has a similar sense of humour to me, that it was pretty funny and worth a watch.
Story -------
Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale (John C Reilly) are two 40 year old who still live at home with their parents. Dale's dad and Dale have been living together Dales' whole life, Dale doesn't work and loves the lifestyle of being able to do what he wants when he wants, especially jamming on his drum kit.
Brennan is a slightly more sensitive character having been raised by his mother his whole life and likes still being looked after even though he is middle aged.
When Dale and Brennan's parents hook up and get married, both of the boys (I say boys, meaning men!) have to learn to share and get along as step brothers. Initially they hate each other and want nothing more than to have their old lives back. Soon enough though, they discover they have lots in common and become best friends. Everything seems to be going well until the boys smash up Dale's dad's boat thus ruining any chance of the parents retiring early as they planned. This leads to the boys being left to fend of themselves, having to get jobs and grow up. Can they do it? Or will they even want to.
My opinion --------------
To be perfectly honest, I was not overly impressed with this film. It was amusing and I did laugh at a few places, but it wasn't really laughing because it was funny, it was more laughing because it was strange. The concept of two 40 year old men living together, and acting like children is what this film is supposed to be mostly about and as such supposed to be funny. I found it more that the actors did such a good job of acting like children, that it might as well have been children and the story wasn't funny enough to carry this through.
When I say the actors did such a good job, I also do not necessarily mean this in a positive way. They are over hyper stereotypes of children, all to be part of the humour obviously, seeing a grown man want to make more room to play activities is mildly amusing) but it just wasn't a strong performance. There were not enough witty lines or clever humour to keep me entertained.
I did enjoy it, but only in comparison to having nothing to do. The story was basic and predictable; the acting was a little cringe worthy in places too. Seeing grown men pretend to sleep walk and through stuff around isn't exactly Oscar winning material, or really that interesting.
I suppose overall I just found the whole concept a little dull. It was a little too silly and tried to add little romantic sub plots to create more naive moments for the 2 leads to play up to.
All in all just a little disappointing.
The films runs time is 98 Minutes. It didn't drag and actually felt quite short.
I'm giving it 3 stars, I would remove a star if you aren't fans of the leads or maybe add a star if you are more in the mood for nonsense than I was last night.
Advantages: Very funny, daft and stupid! Great acting and good story Disadvantages: None from me or hubby

Advantages: Absurd, sweet, consistentally hilarious. Disadvantages: Not quite up to the standard of, say, Anchorman.
Director Adam McKay's third feature length collaboration with Will Ferrell falls some way short of their previous efforts, Anchorman and Talladega Nights, but it's still a joy to be in the company of, and considerably better than, say, Ferrell's Semi-Pro of the previous year.
The film reunites Ferrell and Talladega Nights co-star John C. Reilly to tell the tale of two unemployed men who still live with their parents and are thus forced into what ... ...to meet, fall in love and get married.
The film very much runs along the lines of similar kids-who-hate-each-other-but-come-to-love-one-anot her-in-the-end pictures, the joke being, of course, that Reilly and Ferrell are quite clearly grown men. This central gag is milked for all its worth, and the pair's antics - running the gamut from the gleefully absurd to the psychotic - are frequently hilarious.

...C Reilly play the two step brothers Brennan and Dale and they really are very good in the role. They completely suit the type of actor needed for this role in the way they pull off the actions and the way in which they come across as still being like young children. There is a scene involving them and their two children Tiffany and Tommy, played by Elizabeth Yozan and Lurie Poston all singing in the car which is highly amusing and they managed to pull off this scene very well with the singing and the way they all acted at the same time!
I personally thought the cast did very ...

Advantages: funny Disadvantages: some films better than others
films that starts off strong, with plenty of laughs, but kind of dies off as it goes along. It's almost as if there's not quite enough of a story for the whole film, and it actually drags.
There are plenty of laughs, and a few filthy lines (which I enjoyed) but it somehow doesn't do it.
In truth, Seth Rogen is not good enough to power a film by himself, and one really big name does not make a comedy movie. The best comic movie of the past 5 years, 'Superbad', relies on a varied and strong cast. Apart from Seth, the actors in this film seem to be channel 5 daytime soap type actors, and it shows.

I had never actually wanted to see this flick, but due to its surprisingly decent critic and user reviews I finally gave in.And boy do i regret it!Its neffect is more pronounced since I have been watching such quality films lately.
The title says a lot about the basic premise.Peter and Sarah have been going out for 5 and a half years when suddenly Sarah announces that she wants to break up.Peter is heartbroken and shattered to bits. His friend and stepbrother advices him to go on a vacation, where he ends up meeting Sarah and his new boyfriend(who is a rather annoying character). The film drags on about his stay and is rather predictable with Peter meeting a cute receptionist and Sarah feeling kind of jealous eventually. The film never recovers from such a bad start and continues to be consistently below average.

Having thoroughly enjoyed StepBrothers, I set out on a mission to watch more Will Ferrell films - the first I chose was Old School, a film originally released in 2003, also starring Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughan. The three of them have women troubles, even at the beginning when Frank (Will Ferrell) is due to get married.
He resists the whispers of his friend at the wedding and goes ahead with the marriage but soon hits a wall as he infuriates his wife by revving up his car whilst rocking out to Whitesnake, they seem to be on a different wavelength. Meanwhile Mitch Martin (Luke Wilson) leaves his wife as he discovers she likes to have multiple partners at the same time and rents a house near the local college. They soon decide to set up a communion and kick it off with the craziest of parties - Snoop Dogg even turns up! Frank had ...

Though the pair of men (Ferrell and Reilly) are over the hill, they still aren't out of their parents' houses, and they have to learn to get along when their respective mother and father get married.

Ferrell, the Hollywood star most notorious for going naked in his movies, shows off only his belly, and that for a teasing second. For most of the rest of the time, you'll be reveling in, or enduring, one more exhibition of grown men playing children (Time Magazine, 22/08/2008)
DVD Description
While nearly all Will Ferrell's films are enjoyable on some level, they tend to fire on all cylinders when Adam McKay is involved. McKay co-wrote and directed ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY and TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, two of Ferrell's most popular and consummately hilarious films. McKay reteamed with not only Ferrell for STEP BROTHERS, but also Ferrell's co-star in TALLADEGA NIGHTS, John C. Reilly, who has steadily proven himself to be one of Hollywood's most versatile actors.
The plot is about as simple as they come: Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (Reilly) are deadbeat man-children thrown together when the single parents with whom they live marry. The two initially despise one another, but become fast friends over a shared love of ninjas, COPS, porn magazines, and the comforts of living in the fantasy world of a prolonged adolescence. What makes STEPBROTHERS so much fun, however, has nothing to do with story or script; rather, it's McKay's foresight to step back and let Ferrell and Reilly run wild. The duo kick and punch, fart and burp, laugh and cry, yet somehow elevate such banalities to a level of grotesque poetry, hitting upon what feels like an entirely new comedic language. When the pair acts like children, they are not presenting themselves as immature adults, but are literally acting like children, meticulously duplicating everything from the fears and concerns to the speech patterns and awkward physicality of children. It sounds simple enough, but it requires a dexterity and sense of timing and delivery that is actually quite amazing.
